Resource/Special Needs


Students with special needs are supported by caring and experienced group of support staff. Viewlands Elementary provides a variety of services, such as Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy, a special education teacher to support mainstreamed students, a speech therapist, a school psychologist and a school nurse.

Bilingual Support


Viewlands Elementary is proud to be a linguistically and culturally diverse community.Our entire staff is committed to supporting the success of students with all language and cultural backgrounds.At our school, the administrative staff, classroom teachers and the ELL staff work together to provide content aligned language support that meets the needs of our bilingual students.

What is ELL?

ELL stands for English Language Learners.You may hear other acronyms such as ELD (English Language Development) or ESL (English as a Second Language).

Who provides ELL services?

English Language Development (ELD) teachers who are specially trained to support the language needs of bilingual students

Bilingual instructional assistants who can provide multilingual instructional support and cultural connections

Classroom teacherswho are content area experts and have a holistic view of the students’ learning

Who receives ELL services?

Students can receive ELL services if they meet all three of the following criteria:

  1. Student’s first language is a language other than English AND/OR a language other than English is spoken in the home
  2. Student’s English proficiency is between Levels 1 and 3 according to the state English Language Proficiency Assessment (WELPA placement)
  3. Student’s parent or guardian requests ELL services
  4. What does ELL services look like at Viewlands?
  5. ELL students spend almost their entire school day in their own classrooms, with some time spent in a separate area where they can freely practice their speaking and listening skills with ELD teachers. The Bilingual IAs “push-in” to classrooms where they are incorporated into the classes’ regular learning blocks.The ELD teachers and classroom teachers regularly consult one another regarding the students’ language development.

Las siglas de ELL significan English Language Learners (o Aprendices del Lenguaje Inglés). Hay otras siglas que están relacionadas con ELL que son ELD (English Language Development) y ESL (English as a Second Language)

¿Quién provee los servicios de ELL?

Maestros especializados en English Language Development (ELD) quienes están entrenados especialmente en prestar apoyo a los estudiantes bilingües.

Auxiliares de Instrucción Bilingües quienes pueden proveer un soporte adicional con instrucciones en varios idiomas y conexiones culturales.

Maestros de Instrucción de Clases que son expertos en su área y contenido en particular, y poseen una visión holística del desarrollo estudiantil.

¿Quién recibe servicios ELL?

Estudiantes pueden recibir servicios ELL si cumplen con TODAS LAS 3 condiciones siguientes:

4.      El primer idioma del estudiante NO es inglés, Y/O en la casa se habla un idioma que no es el inglés.

5.      El nivel de manejo del idioma inglés por parte del estudiante está entre los niveles 1 y 3 de acuerdo con la Evaluación de Domino del Idioma Inglés del estado de Washington (WELPA Placement).

6.      El padre o guardián legal del estudiante solicita los servicios ELL.

 

¿Cómo son los servicios ELL en Viewlands?

Los estudiantes enlistados en el programa ELL pasan la mayoría de su tiempo en la escuela en sus propias aulas, y una pequeña parte del día lo pasan en un área separada donde pueden practicar libremente sus habilidades de habla y comprensión con maestros de ELD. Los auxiliares de instrucción bilingües son “incorporados” a las aulas durante los bloques de enseñanzas regulares de los estudiantes. Los maestros de ELD al igual que los maestros de las clases se consultan regularmente con relación al desarrollo lingüístico de los estudiantes de ELL.

Operation School Bell offers children in need help with basic clothing. This new clothing enhances self-esteem and promotes improved school attendance. Please inquire with the school secretary at 206-252-4400.

WA Information Network: If you are in need of health and human service information and referrals and other assistance dial 211 from any phone in King County or go to www.win211.org.

Community Resources Online (CRO) is the most up-to-date and comprehensive database of health and human services in King County.  With more than 6,000 services listed, it is the most effective way to find assistance with such needs as rent/mortgage payments, in-home care services, low-cost mental health or chemical dependency counseling, or legal aid

Before and After School Care



We are excited to bring a unique program to the families, children and community of Viewlands. For over fifteen years Grace Alam has had the privilege of working with children from diverse backgrounds.

As the community has noticed, she is committed to providing the best care for our children. Grace and her staff have been the recipient of many local and national awards as well as featured on nationally syndicated PBS programs, the University of Washington School of Nursing, and King 5 Television.

They have a low child to teacher ratio, which promotes a peaceful, supportive but focused environment. The children will participate in vast array of activities such as field trips, camping,arts, and music.
