    August 2016

    Dear Viewlands Families,

Welcome to the new school year.  We are ecstatic about the upcoming year and are eager to meet our learning community.  While you enjoy the last days of summer, please review the following letter regarding the opening of school. In the best interest of balancing classrooms for student learning, please note that there may be a few changes to classroom assignments once school begins.

The first day of school for 1st through 5th grade is Wednesday, September 7th.  The Kindergartners start on Monday September 12th.  School hours are 7:55 AM-2:05 PM.

We firmly believe that student success is ultimately dependent upon our partnership with you, the parents and guardians.  Your involvement in the education of your child is both valued and critical to the success of this most important work.  We want to thank you for this opportunity to ensure your student’s safety, academic, and emotional progress at Viewlands.

The Nuts and Bolts of Opening Week

    Meet and Greet

We invite parents and children to attend a school Meet and Greet, Tuesday, September 6th from 8:00-9:00 am.  This is a great opportunity to meet new staff and other parents plus give students a chance to meet their teachers.  We are hoping by having this event in the morning it will allow families more time in the evening together to have closure to summer and to prepare for the first day of school. If you would like to bring your school supplies on this morning, please feel free. Our supply list is on our school website

Kindergarten parents will have a scheduled 1:1 meeting with their teacher, September 7-9th, prior to school starting for them on September 12th.

    School Hours

School will begin at 7:55 a.m. and end at 2:05 p.m.  We will not have any playground supervision prior to the start of the school day. We ask that you say your good-byes to your student once you have walked them to the classroom.

    Picking up students

Dismissal for Kindergarten classes will be at 2:00. Please pick up Kindergartners in the covered area outside room 3.

The 1st-5th grade classrooms will dismiss at 2:05. Please pick up non-bussed students immediately after school.   In order to build community and ease congestion we will have signs posted for parents/guardians to wait to pick up their students.  Parents with students in classrooms surrounding the courtyard, please pick them up in the covered courtyard by the gym.  Classrooms in the portable village please pick up south of P7. We ask that you not wait for your student outside classroom doors, so students can stay engaged in learning and also to help with hallway congestion. There will also be a load/unload zone on the school side the street out front, if you would like to pick your student up there.

    Office Hours: 7:00 am-3:30 pm   206-252-4400

Volunteers will be on hand to assist students for the first several days.  Bus assignments for those students who qualify should be received in the mail.  Bus number, pick up points, and time should be included in this notice.  Please call the Transportation Office at 252-0900 if you have specific questions. We appreciate your patience as bus drivers learn their new routes. Since many of you like to bring your children into the building the first day, please find parking on the neighboring streets.  We ask that you honor the signs in front of the building regarding parking; this is a drop/pick up zone. Also, please do not park in front of mailboxes on 3rd Ave NW and 105th NW.  Please use the crosswalks to avoid accidents.

    First Week Packet

Please be on the lookout for a large manila envelope called the ‘first week packet’ that each student will bring home the first full week of school. It will be packed with school and PTA information and important forms to be returned to school ASAP.

    Here’s to a great year!
