Hello Viewlands Families!
Today we completed our 2nd full week of school. As we head into the next few weeks, this is when students are building their school stamina. The first couple weeks the pure excitement, enthusiasm, and for some nervousness propels everyone through the school days. In the next few weeks, we often notice that some students will be more tired and struggle a little more to navigate the learning load and demands, as they build their own school stamina. During the summer, routines and schedules are often different, including sleep, so it takes a while for students to be back into the groove of school. Families can support this by focusing on getting back into good evening routines with sleep. A good night sleep can really help children settle back into the school routines and build that school stamina.
Next week, on Thursday we will have our first safety drill. We will have a fire drill, practicing evacuating the school. Teachers are talking about this ahead of time in classrooms to help students be prepared. Some of our future drills will be surprises, but students will know ahead of time and practiced this before the actual drill for the first one of this school year. We have safety drills monthly. The drills include fire drills, earthquake drills, shelter in-place drills, and lock down drills.
Does your family have a tradition, cultural celebration, or heritage game or activity that is part of your family story and identity that you want to share with the classroom community this school year? Please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher if there is something you would like to share with their classroom or school community. We want students to be able to bring in important parts of their family story, cultural background, family traditions, or lived history to our school community.
A few highlights from my visits in classrooms and with students this first full week include: playing the game Mancala with some 3rd graders; playing math games with some 2nd graders; spending time during the morning time with kindergarteners playing, reading, and singing; continuing to see our 4th and 5th grade student leaders support kindergarteners at lunch; and celebrating some reading success with a couple 1st and 2nd grade students.
Your children are bright, inquisitive, and creative thinkers. We will continue to seek ways to make every student feel known, valued, and empowered through the year.

Lost and Found
The lost and found will quickly become a very full beast! (: To help us reunite your child with items, like coats, water bottles, hats, and lunchboxes is to label them with their name. Please write your child’s name on those items. We will have volunteers supporting our office team in helping labeled items from the lost and found get back to the students.
Bring Your Family to School Night: Tuesday September 30th
Viewlands will host a Bring Your Family to School Open house on Tuesday, September 30th (except for Mr. Thorpe’s class) in the evening. This is for all current Viewlands families. Every Viewlands student will be given a Viewlands Passport. The passport will have places to visit that are the spaces your child goes to during the school day, including your child’s classroom, the art room, the gym for PE, the library, and the lunchroom. You will have the chance to see the spaces and meet the educators that are part of your child’s elementary experience this year. There will be other optional places to visit, including the multilingual team, special education team, school counselor, and VEPTSA.
The event is an open house style. Typically, families were here for 30-60 minutes to visit the different spaces. The event will start at 5:30PM and end at 7:00pm. Please plan to arrive no later than 6:30pm so you have time to visit the spaces. Families will need to exit the school building/campus by 7:05pm. This is not a drop off event, students attend with their families.
We encourage walking or biking for the event if possible. If your family will need to drive, please park in approved areas. There is parking available on the west side of 3rd in front of the school, on the north side of the school on 107th, and limited parking in the parking lot with spaces not used by staff. Please do not park on 105th west of 3rd Ave, and avoid parking in non-parking areas on the east side of 3rd Ave.
Orcas Move Week
The week of October 6th we have two events happening as part of our Orcas MOVE week celebrating healthy physical activity, Move-a-Thon and Fall Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day.
Monday, October 6th in the AM at school is our Move-a-thon.
- This is a fun event where students jog, run, walk, or skip laps on the playground. This is a co-sponsored event with the school and VEPTSA. It is a fundraiser that helps VEPTSA support our school. It also is something Coach Lauren supports with the connection to healthy physical activity.
- We will need volunteers for the move-a-thon. We will need around 15-20 volunteers to be at school in the morning. VEPTSA will have a sign-up soon.
- Volunteers already approved are preferred. However, for a one-time staff supervised event, family members that are in process of becoming a volunteer can support Move-a-thon given the parameters of the event and support roles.
- VEPTSA will have a sign-up on Konstella for this soon.
- I will send out more information about Move-a-thon early next week, including how to sign up to support this event.
- If you are able, please consider participating in the fundraising part of this event.
How to Participate
- Go to the Student Center and search for your child’s page (you’ll also see sample text, email, and social posts you can use for outreach).
- Share the link with family and friends. Supporters can choose a per-lap pledge or a flat donation.
Your support directly funds playground supervision, classroom supplies, field trips, teacher grants, and community events that make Viewlands a safe, joyful place for every student to learn and thrive.
Wednesday, October 8th is the Fall Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day.
- This event invites participants to celebrate the joy of active commuting while building a sense of community and school spirit.
- Families are encouraged to participate by walking or riding to school. Families can join one of the Viewlands Bike Busses, one north route and one south route.

Hoy completamos nuestra 2da semana completa de clases. A medida que nos acercamos a las próximas semanas, es cuando los estudiantes están desarrollando su resistencia escolar. Las primeras dos semanas, la pura emoción, el entusiasmo y un poco de nerviosismo impulsan a todos a través de los días escolares. En las próximas semanas, a menudo notamos que algunos estudiantes estarán más cansados y lucharán un poco más para navegar por la carga y las demandas de aprendizaje, a medida que desarrollan su propia resistencia escolar. Sus hijos son pensadores brillantes, inquisitivos y creativos. Continuaremos buscando formas de hacer que cada estudiante se sienta conocido, valorado y empoderado durante todo el año.

Objetos perdidos
¡Los objetos perdidos se convertirán rápidamente en una bestia muy completa! (: Para ayudarnos a reunir a su hijo con artículos como abrigos, botellas de agua, sombreros y loncheras, es etiquetarlos con su nombre. Escriba el nombre de su hijo en esos artículos. Tendremos voluntarios que apoyarán a nuestro equipo de oficina para ayudar a que los artículos etiquetados de los objetos perdidos y encontrados regresen a los estudiantes.
Traiga a su familia a la escuela Noche: martes 30 de septiembre
Viewlands organizará una jornada de puertas abiertas de Traiga a su familia a la escuela el martes 30 de septiembre (excepto para la clase del Sr. Thorpe) por la noche. Esto es para todas las familias actuales de Viewlands. Cada estudiante de Viewlands recibirá un pasaporte de Viewlands. Semana de movimiento de orcas
La semana del 6 de octubre tenemos dos eventos como parte de nuestra semana Orcas MOVE que celebra la actividad física saludable, Move-a-Thon y el Día de Caminar, Andar en Bicicleta y Rodar a la Escuela de Otoño.
El lunes 6 de octubre por la mañana en la escuela es nuestro maratón.
- Este es un evento divertido en el que los estudiantes trotan, corren, caminan o saltan vueltas en el patio de recreo. Este es un evento copatrocinado con la escuela y VEPTSA. Es una recaudación de fondos que ayuda a VEPTSA a apoyar a nuestra escuela. También es algo que la entrenadora Lauren apoya con la conexión con la actividad física saludable.
- Necesitaremos voluntarios para el maratón. Necesitaremos alrededor de 15-20 voluntarios para estar en la escuela por la mañana. VEPTSA tendrá una inscripción pronto.
- Se prefieren los voluntarios ya aprobados. Sin embargo, para un evento supervisado por el personal de una sola vez, los miembros de la familia que están en proceso de convertirse en voluntarios pueden apoyar a Move-a-thon dados los parámetros del evento y los roles de apoyo.
