Principal Wheeler’s Weekly Update

Hello Viewlands Families!

Winter Break has arrived. Today there were many celebrations of writing and fun activities! Christa’s 2nd grade, Ms. Norma’s 2nd grade, and Mr. Brandon/Ms. Riley’s 1st/2nd grade classrooms hosted a community potluck and writing celebration. Ms. Veliz’s 1st graders hosted a writing celebration and a cookie extravaganza! There were many pajama and stuffy celebrations! Mr. W’s 1st graders took home their animal creations, which were showcased in our hallway. The 4th and 5th graders in Mr. Thorpe’s class had a surprise with the chairs at their desks, imagine 4th and 5th graders in kindergarten sized chairs! There were many ways classroom communities celebrated and showcased learning together! Thank you to all the families that were able to come to these celebrations and publishing parties today! We also hosted a dance party at the lunch recesses, which is always a lot of fun! We danced, we smiled, we laughed. There was a lot of joy!

We hope your family has a safe winter break and find little moments of joy in time spent together! We will welcome students back to school on Monday, January 5th. Creative Kids will be open Monday, December 22nd and Tuesday, December 23rd. The school will be closed during winter break. The playground will be open this weekend and then the evening of Tuesday the 23rd through the rest of the winter break.

On December 7th, the Viewlands Killer Whales Lego Robotics team of 10 -5th grade students competed with 28 other elementary and middle school teams. This was the first year Viewlands had a Lego Robotics Team. Thanks to an opportunity offered to Viewlands with grant funding for the start up equipment, we had a team this year. The team placed 6th of the 29 teams in the robot programming challenge and received the Rising Star award for their combined efforts in the robot programming and their presentation about an engineering solution to a problem. Congrats to the team! Last week we celebrated the team during their lunch. This year Mr. Thorpe served as their team advisor. We would love to continue this in the future. In order to continue it we will need a couple family or community volunteers that would be willing to support the team. The commitment is primarily in the fall, one day a week after school Late September through early December, communications with families, and supporting students at the competition day, which is an all day event one weekend day in early December. If you are interested or know a community member that might be interested in this for next fall, please reach out to Ms. Wheeler.

Today, the 3rd issue of the Viewlands Chatter, a student-led newspaper was published (this is the first issue this year). That is always a highlight. When we return from winter break the newsletter will be printed and distributed to our 3rd-5th grade students.

Your children are bright, inquisitive, and creative thinkers. We will continue to seek ways to make every student feel known, valued, and empowered through the year.

We hope all in our community have a safe winter break. We will welcome all back in 2026.

Mr. Gebiyo, Viewlands Custodial Engineer

Mr. Gebiyo is our head custodial engineer. Our Viewlands community are all very grateful for Mr. Gebiyo! He works hard and is dedicated to helping keep our school clean and safe. Mr. Gebiyo is kind, funny, and hard-working. He is multilingual, speaking multiple languages, including Amharic and English. Mr. Gebiyo has been off for the past 2 weeks, while he welcomed his wife and young daughter, Zafran, to their new home here.

Thank you Mr. Gebiyo for being part of our school community. We are grateful your family is now here with you!

We raised $13,095 with Chuck’s generous match for Give Big for Viewlands! Additionally, our community donated $1,975 in grocery store gift cards for our Winter Drive which goes to support Viewlands families in need over winter break. Family Math Night & Resource Fair – Save the date! Thursday, January 22, 5:30-7 p.m.

Bring the whole family to Family Math Night and Resource Fair on Thursday, January 22, 5:30-7 p.m. Viewlands is partnering with Zeno, local middle and high school math clubs, and local organizations for an evening of fun math activities and family resources. We need many volunteers to support this event, please consider sharing with a community member to support (volunteer signup here).

¡Hola, familias de Viewlands!

Han llegado las vacaciones de invierno. ¡Hoy hubo muchas celebraciones de escritura y actividades divertidas! Las aulas de 2º de Christa, 2º de la Sra. Norma y de 1º/2º de primaria de los Sr. Brandon/Sra. Riley organizaron una comida comunitaria y una celebración de escritura. Los alumnos de primero de primaria de la señorita Veliz organizaron una celebración de escritura y una extravagancia de galletas. ¡Hubo muchas celebraciones de pijamas y sofocantes! Los alumnos de primero de primaria del Sr. W se llevaron a casa sus creaciones de animales, que se exhibieron en nuestro pasillo. Los alumnos de 4º y 5º de la clase del señor Thorpe se sorprendieron con las sillas en sus pupitres, ¡imagina a los de 4º y 5º en sillones del tamaño de un jardín de infancia! ¡Había muchas formas en que las comunidades de aula celebraban y mostraban el aprendizaje juntos! ¡Gracias a todas las familias que pudieron venir hoy a estas celebraciones y fiestas editoriales! También organizamos una fiesta de baile en los recreos del almuerzo, ¡que siempre es muy divertida! Bailamos, sonreímos, reímos. ¡Hubo mucha alegría!

¡Esperamos que tu familia tenga unas vacaciones de invierno seguras y encuentre pequeños momentos de alegría en el tiempo que pasamos juntos! Daremos la bienvenida a los estudiantes de nuevo al colegio el lunes 5 de enero. Creative Kids estará abierto el lunes 22 de diciembre y el martes 23 de diciembre. El colegio estará cerrado durante las vacaciones de invierno. El parque infantil estará abierto este fin de semana y luego la tarde del martes 23 durante el resto de las vacaciones de invierno.

El 7 de diciembre, el equipo de robótica Lego Viewlands Killer Whales, formado por 10 alumnos de 5º a 5º curso, compitió con otros 28 equipos de primaria y secundaria. Este fue el primer año en que Viewlands tuvo un equipo de robótica de Lego. Gracias a una oportunidad ofrecida a Viewlands con financiación subvencionada para el equipo inicial, este año tuvimos un equipo. El equipo quedó en 6º lugar de los 29 equipos en el reto de programación de robots y recibió el premio Rising Star por su esfuerzo conjunto en la programación de robots y su presentación sobre una solución de ingeniería a un problema. ¡Enhorabuena al equipo! La semana pasada celebramos al equipo durante su almuerzo. Este año, el Sr. Thorpe fue asesor de equipo. Nos encantaría continuar con esto en el futuro. Para continuar, necesitaremos un par de familiares o voluntarios comunitarios dispuestos a apoyar al equipo. El compromiso se realiza principalmente en otoño, un día a la semana después del colegio desde finales de septiembre hasta principios de diciembre, la comunicación con las familias y el apoyo a los estudiantes en el día de la competición, que es un evento de todo el día un fin de semana a principios de diciembre. Si estás interesado o conoces a algún miembro de la comunidad que pueda interesarle esto para el próximo otoño, por favor contacta con la Sra. Wheeler.

Hoy se ha publicado el tercer número del Viewlands Chatter, un periódico dirigido por estudiantes (este es el primer número de este año). Eso siempre es lo más destacado. Cuando regresemos de las vacaciones de invierno, el boletín se imprimirá y distribuirá a nuestros alumnos de 3º a 5º curso.

Tus hijos son inteligentes, curiosos y pensadores creativos. Seguiremos buscando formas de que cada estudiante se sienta conocido, valorado y empoderado a lo largo del año.

Esperamos que todos en nuestra comunidad tengan unas vacaciones invernales seguras. Daremos la bienvenida a todos de nuevo en 2026.

Sr. Gebiyo, ingeniero de limpieza de Viewlands

El señor Gebiyo es nuestro jefe de ingenieros de limpieza. ¡Nuestra comunidad de Viewlands está muy agradecida con el señor Gebiyo! Trabaja duro y está dedicado a ayudar a mantener nuestro colegio limpio y seguro. El señor Gebiyo es amable, divertido y trabajador. Es multilingüe y habla varios idiomas, incluyendo el amárico y el inglés. El señor Gebiyo ha estado de descanso las últimas dos semanas, mientras daba la bienvenida a su esposa y a su hija pequeña, Zafran, en su nuevo hogar aquí.

Trae a toda la familia a la Noche de Matemáticas y Feria de Recursos en Familia el jueves 22 de enero, de 17:30 a 19:00. Viewlands colabora con Zeno, clubes de matemáticas de secundaria y bachillerato locales, y organizaciones locales para una velada de actividades matemáticas divertidas y recursos familiares.
