Hello Viewlands Families!

This Monday one of our Viewlands alumni student representing Rising Sons, 6th grader, Josiah, spoke in front of thousands gathered for the MLK Jr. march organized by the Seattle MLK Coalition. The voice of our students is powerful. The message is strong, kindness and showing up for each other.

“I believe we keep showing up even though negative things happen in the world. There is so much good. Take a look around you. We are standing in a real moment of Matin Luther King’s dream. Where we go from here is to keep being kind and keep doing good. And most important keep showing up.” – Josiah Moran, 6th Grader, RESMS, Viewlands Alum Student

On Thursday this week, the school and VEPTSA co-hosted our Math Night and Community Resource Fair. It was great to see our Viewlands families there. If you weren’t able to make it, we hope you can make it next year. It is a fun event of math games and a great connection to both community organizations and middle and high school programs! Thank you to the community organizations that were here at our Community Resource Fair, Seattle Metro, Seattle Public Library, Neighborcare, and FamilyWorks! Thank you to the VEPTSA Volunteer that helped lead and coordinate the event, Sam Orr! Thank you to staff members, Breanne Kutch, Norma Andrade, and Alex Gorohoff who were on this event planning team. Thank you to the RESMS math club, Lincoln High School math club, Ingraham High School math club, and our Viewlands alumni middle and high school students that volunteered to support math night. It was wonderful to see so many Viewlands alumni students.

A few highlights from my visits in classrooms and with students this week include: listening to 4th and 5th graders explain paraphrasing and why credible sources are important; playing a game with a kindergartener; talking with 3rd graders about traits and variations as they collect evidence and discuss why one type of snail has a lower survival rate than another type of snail; and seeing families, students, and alumni students at our math night and community resource fair event this week.

Your children are bright, inquisitive, and creative thinkers. We will continue to seek ways to make every student feel known, valued, and empowered through the year.

Salmon in Schools:  Our Eggs Have Hatched

Our salmon eggs have hatched. We are excited to observe them in the next stage of alevin. Our 4th and 5th graders are creating posters and other learning materials to teach other students and community members!

The posters created by our 4th graders will be put up in the hallways, stairs, and around the tank in the coming weeks to teach others about the salmon. Our 5th graders are creating other learning tools that they will use when they visit K-3 classrooms to teach students about the salmon. Students teaching students is a great way to support student leadership, embrace what it means to be part of a community, and support learning for all students.

Viewlands Ultimate Frisbee Spring 2026

Seattle Public Schools Highly Capable Updates

There are many changes that have occurred this school year in the identification categories, pathway options, math progression options, timelines, and more in the Highly Capable services in Seattle Public Schools.

There are important dates / timelines regarding notification for newly identified students and enrollment. The enrollment considerations are for students that qualify for highly capable services and are entering 2nd through 6th grade next year.

Below are a few of those important dates and timelines. I have also attached an “Understanding Highly Capable Services” document for Viewlands and the website link to the Highly Capable department page on the Seattle Public School site.

Important Dates:

• Newly identified highly capable eligibility notifications will be available on the source on February 7th. Highly Capable is now the only designation.
• Appeals: Families can appeal eligibility decisions. The appeal window is Feb 7th through Feb 20th. Families must submit appeals in that window. Final appeal decisions will be available in the Source on February 27th.
• Enrollment Dates: Open Choice enrollment is required for students identified for highly capable services that plan to enroll in the cohort model option school (Cascadia for 2nd through 5th) AND for the Highly Capable pathway middle school (Robert Eagle Staff Middle School) for 6th grade. It is recommended that families with 5th grade students that are eligible for highly capable services review the math pathway options carefully in the attached document. The open choice priority enrollment window is January 5th through February 28th. Late applications will be accepted through March 31st, but submitting open choice applications in the priority window is recommended. No enrollment forms are needed to stay in your neighborhood option.

The Broadview Branch Library of Seattle Public Libraries is having a 50th Anniversary Celebration. There are music and board game activities Thursday Jan 22nd from 5-7:30PM and Indigenous Storytelling with Siobhan Kekoa on Saturday Jan 24th at 11AM, following by a celebration at 1PM.

Winter General Meeting – Next Tuesday

Join us for the VEPTSA Winter General Meeting on Tuesday, January 27, from 6:30–8:00 pm in the school library. If you’ve never attended a PTA meeting before, this is a great place to start.

We’ll share how our fundraising is making an impact, gather your input on the budget, and discuss advocacy initiatives—along with ways to get involved even if you have very limited time. You’ll also have a chance to meet other parents and help shape our priorities for the 2025–2026 school year.

Seeking Volunteers for VEPTSA’s Nominating Committee

The PTA is seeking 3–4 volunteers to serve on our VEPTSA Officer Nominating Committee. This small group will help recruit and recommend PTA Officers for the 2026–27 school year.We especially encourage families who are newer to Viewlands, or who are interested in getting more involved in shaping our school community, to consider joining.

¡Hola, familias de Viewlands!

Este lunes, uno de nuestros antiguos alumnos de Viewlands que representaba a Rising Sons, un alumno de 6º de primaria, Josiah, habló ante miles de personas reunidas en la marcha MLK Jr. organizada por la Coalición MLK de Seattle. La voz de nuestros estudiantes es poderosa. El mensaje es fuerte, amabilidad y estar presentes los unos para los otros.

“Creo que seguimos apareciendo aunque pasen cosas negativas en el mundo. Hay tanto bueno. Mira a tu alrededor. Estamos de pie en un momento real del sueño de Matin Luther King. El jueves de esta semana, el colegio y VEPTSA coorganizaron nuestra Noche de Matemáticas y Feria de Recursos Comunitarios. Fue genial ver a nuestras familias de Viewlands allí. Si no pudiste, esperamos que puedas hacerlo el año que viene. Es un evento divertido de juegos matemáticos y una gran conexión tanto con organizaciones comunitarias como con programas de secundaria y bachillerato. ¡Gracias a las organizaciones comunitarias que estuvieron aquí en nuestra Feria de Recursos Comunitarios, Seattle Metro, Biblioteca Pública de Seattle, Neighborcare y FamilyWorks! ¡Gracias al voluntario de VEPTSA que ayudó a liderar y coordinar el evento, Sam Orr! Gracias a los miembros del equipo Breanne Kutch, Norma Andrade y Alex Gorohoff que formaron parte de este equipo de organización del evento. Gracias al club de matemáticas RESMS, al club de matemáticas del Instituto Lincoln, al club de matemáticas del Instituto Ingraham y a nuestros antiguos alumnos de Viewlands de secundaria y bachillerato que se ofrecieron como voluntarios para apoyar la noche de matemáticas. Fue maravilloso ver a tantos estudiantes antiguos alumnos de Viewlands.

Algunos de los momentos destacados de mis visitas a las aulas y con estudiantes esta semana incluyen: escuchar a alumnos de 4º y 5º de primaria explicar la paráfraseo y por qué las fuentes creíbles son importantes; jugar con un niño de infantil; hablar con alumnos de 3º curso sobre rasgos y variaciones mientras recopilan evidencias y discuten por qué un tipo de caracol tiene una tasa de supervivencia menor que otro; y ver a familias, estudiantes y antiguos alumnos en nuestra Noche de Matemáticas y Feria de Recursos Comunitarios esta semana.

Tus hijos son inteligentes, curiosos y pensadores creativos. Seguiremos buscando formas de que cada estudiante se sienta conocido, valorado y empoderado a lo largo del año.

Salmón en los bancos: Nuestros huevos han eclosionado

Nuestros huevos de salmón han eclosionado. Estamos emocionados de observarlos en la siguiente etapa de alevin. ¡Nuestros alumnos de 4º y 5º están creando carteles y otros materiales de aprendizaje para enseñar a otros alumnos y miembros de la comunidad!

Los carteles creados por nuestros alumnos de 4º se colgarán en los pasillos, escaleras y alrededor del acuario en las próximas semanas para enseñar a otros sobre el salmón. Nuestros alumnos de quinto curso están creando otras herramientas de aprendizaje que utilizarán cuando visiten aulas de K-3 para enseñar a los alumnos sobre el salmón. Que los estudiantes enseñen es una excelente manera de apoyar el liderazgo estudiantil, abrazar lo que significa formar parte de una comunidad y apoyar el aprendizaje para todos los estudiantes.

Actualizaciones de las Escuelas Públicas de Seattle con Alta Capacidad

Este curso se han producido muchos cambios en las categorías de identificación, opciones de vía, opciones de progresión matemática, cronogramas y más en los servicios de Alta Capacidad en las Escuelas Públicas de Seattle.

Hay fechas y plazos importantes respecto a la notificación de los estudiantes recién identificados y la matrícula. Las consideraciones de matrícula son para estudiantes que califican para servicios de alta capacidad y que entrarán de 2º a 6º curso el próximo año.

A continuación, algunas de esas fechas y plazos importantes. También he adjuntado un documento titulado “Comprendiendo los servicios altamente capacitados” para Viewlands y el enlace web a la página del departamento de Altamente Capaces en la web de la Escuela Pública de Seattle.

Fechas importantes:

• Las notificaciones de elegibilidad de alta capacidad recién identificadas estarán disponibles en la fuente el 7 de febrero. Altamente Capaz es ahora la única designación.
• Apelaciones: Las familias pueden apelar las decisiones de elegibilidad. El periodo de apelación es del 7 al 20 de febrero. Las familias deben presentar apelaciones en ese plazo. Las decisiones finales de apelación estarán disponibles en la Fuente el 27 de febrero.
• Fechas de inscripción: La inscripción en opción abierta es obligatoria para los estudiantes identificados para servicios altamente capacitados que planean matricularse en el modelo de colegio de opción por cohorte (Cascadia para 2º a 5º) Y para la escuela secundaria de vía alta capacidad (Robert Eagle Staff Middle School) para 6º curso. Se recomienda que las familias con alumnos de 5º curso que sean elegibles para servicios altamente capacitados revisen cuidadosamente las opciones de vía matemática en el documento adjunto. El periodo de inscripción prioritario de opción abierta es del 5 de enero al 28 de febrero. Las solicitudes tardías serán aceptadas hasta el 31 de marzo, pero se recomienda presentar solicitudes de opción abierta dentro del periodo de prioridad. No se necesitan formularios de inscripción para permanecer en tu opción de barrio.

Celebración del 50º aniversario de la Biblioteca Sucursal de Broadview

Jueves 22 y sábado 24 de enero

La Biblioteca Sucursal Broadview de las Bibliotecas Públicas de Seattle celebra su 50º aniversario. El jueves 22 de enero habrá actividades de música y juegos de mesa de 17:00 a 19:30 y Narración Indígena con Siobhan Kekoa el sábado 24 de enero a las 11:00, seguido de una celebración a la 13:00.

Asamblea General de Invierno – El próximo martes

Únete a nosotros en la Asamblea General de Invierno de VEPTSA el martes 27 de enero, de 18:30 a 20:00 en la biblioteca del colegio. Si nunca has asistido a una reunión de la AMPA, este es un excelente punto de partida.

Compartiremos cómo nuestra recaudación de fondos está teniendo impacto, recopilaremos tu opinión sobre el presupuesto y hablaremos sobre iniciativas de incidencia, junto con formas de implicarte incluso si dispones de muy poco tiempo. También tendrás la oportunidad de conocer a otros padres y ayudar a definir nuestras prioridades para el curso escolar 2025–2026.

La PTA está buscando 3 o 4 voluntarios para formar parte de nuestro Comité de Nominación de Oficiales de VEPTSA. Este pequeño grupo ayudará a reclutar y recomendar oficiales de la asociación de padres y ratais para el curso 2026–27. Animamos especialmente a las familias que son nuevas en Viewlands, o que estén interesadas en involucrarse más en la formación de nuestra comunidad escolar, a considerar unirse.
