| | | | Hello Viewlands Families!
May is coming to a close this weekend! Arriving to June each school year is always a big moment, mostly of celebration for another school year of learning and growing our community together. In addition to celebration, it is important to recognize that the end of a school year can be hard for some students and some families as school is not only a place for learning, but it is a place for routine and access to supports. Also, while consistent routines and structured days are important for elementary age children, June is full of end of year events and changes. This means it will also be full of big feelings all across the spectrum! We will do our best to support students through those big feelings. Families can support by creating space for those big feelings at home, keeping home routines as consistent as possible, and most importantly making sure sleeping routines are strong at home for your children.
Today our kindergarten students ventured off on a low tide Carkeek beach walk. This requires a lot of planning and coordination by the team and many family volunteers as chaperones, as well as lunch transport helpers. Thank you to all the family volunteers that were chaperones or helpers today!
There will be many more Carkeek fieldtrips in June. We are incredibly grateful for all of our volunteers! Thank you for volunteering as chaperones on fieldtrips, supporting school events like the upcoming Field Day, and supporting classrooms and VEPTSA. Volunteer support helps us be a thriving community! A reminder that all volunteers have to be approved through the formal process. Once you are approved, it lasts for 2 years before you have to renew your approval status.
Last week on Thursday. I was surprised with the Foster Award from the Alliance for Education at our pre-planned C-CATS assembly. I am still reflecting and processing that moment. It was completely unexpected. I am beyond grateful for all the kindness and love and support shown by current and past Viewlands community members. As I reflect, I must share that the community at Viewlands is strong and thriving. In that moment, when we had past and present Viewlands community all together in the gym, you could see, feel, and hear our community thrive! I also am shocked at how well this secret was held for a month by the staff, VEPTSA leaders, and my family! It was not until a few minutes before the assembly that day that I have any clue that something unknown to me was happening. At lunch moments before the assembly, a 1st grader said, "Ms. Wheeler we tell you we love you. I am so excited to do the secret with you." It made me smile and wonder what secret he was referring to. THANK YOU to this AMAZING COMMUNITY!
We always have work to do to best support all students and families as we grow and change. We will always need to keep growing and reflecting while working to help all feel known, valued, and empowered. We will make mistakes that will help us grow and learn together. "Once an Orca, Always an Orca" has been a well established theme of our past and continues to be part of our current lived story as a community as we bid farewell to students and families transitioning to new school communities. We continue to be held up with a strong foundation by all those that have been part of Viewlands past and grow stronger with those that are part of our current story. Thank you to our community, past, present, and future.
Your children are bright, inquisitive, and creative thinkers. We will continue to seek ways to make every student feel known, valued, and empowered through the year.
In Partnership, Carrie Wheeler | Viewlands Principal | | | | | | | | The last day of school is Wednesday, June 17th. Dismissal that day is at 1:25PM.
Will your child be ending their school year earlier than the last day of school? If yes, please reach out to notify the office team and your child’s classroom teacher. You can e-mail or send a talking points text. We need to know your child’s last day so we can make sure they take home all end of year items.
Will your child have a different dismissal plan on the last day than their normal Wednesday dismissal plan? If yes, please reach out to notify the office team and your child’s classroom teacher. You can e-mail or send a talking points text. We need to know any changes from the normal plan in advance so we make sure your child follows the plan. Last minute changes or communications at dismissal can’t be tracked in time to support all students successfully. | | | Field day is an annual tradition at Viewlands in June as one of our end of year community celebrations honoring all of our work learning and growing together this school year.
