Hello Viewlands Families!

The fall weather is here, with some cool crisp blue skies, sunny days, and the rain. Rain is part of our Pacific NW weather. At Viewlands we go outside for recess rain or shine. We go outside at recesses unless there are unsafe conditions, such as thunder/lightning storms, hail, or torrential downpours with flooding areas on the playground. Outside recess time is important! Next week looks rainy.

Please send your child in with a coat on cooler or rainy days. Please remember to label coats and any other belongings with your child’s name. Labeling items with their name helps us reunite your child with items left at school and in the overflowing lost and found.

A few highlights from my visits in classrooms and with students this week include: talking about different ways to make numbers and expanding those ideas with 1st graders; throwing and catching activities in stations with kindergarteners in the green group; 4th and 5th graders working on their research about Native American tribes and the regions of the United States; and making marigolds from tissue paper in art class with 3rd graders and coloring marigolds with kindergarteners in the yellow group.

Your children are bright, inquisitive, and creative thinkers. We will continue to seek ways to make every student feel known, valued, and empowered through the year.

Zoo Field trip is Friday the 31st!

Our annual zoo fieldtrip is next week on Friday, October 31st. A few reminders about our fieldtrip:

Important Information for Families:

• We go to the zoo rain or shine. This means it will be important for students to wear appropriate clothing if it is rainy. We are outside while at the zoo. If your child needs a coat, we have a limited number of sizes at school. Please e-mail Ms. Lin in the office at lkmccormick@seattleschools.org
• We will be outside and walking around and playing while at the zoo. Please make sure your child wears comfortable shoes that are suitable for being outside on our zoo adventure all day. Please do not wear shows that slip off easily or are not comfortable for lots of walking!
• Students that bring home lunches, please remember we will be eating outside and will NOT have access to silverware or napkins, so they need to have everything they need for a picnic style lunch.
• Student that requested a school lunch, will have a picnic style lunch from the school.
• If your child is feeling sick or has any even light illness symptoms, they should stay home. All students are going to the zoo and will be outside and walking most of the day.
• We go to the zoo on Friday, October 31st, as our fall celebration. We do not dress in costumes or host Halloween parties at school. Students and families that celebrate Halloween traditions can enjoy those in the evening!
• Students need to arrive on time to school. We will be leaving the school between 9 and 9:15AM. Students that arrive after that will not be able to go on the fieldtrip and there will not be any classes and teachers at school. Please be on time!
• We will not return to school until around 1:30PM. We won’t be able to accommodate early pick-ups until after 1:45.
• Parents/guardians that are chaperoning, can sign their children out at the end of the zoo fieldtrip. There will be a sign out at our bus pick up zone at the zoo if you want to leave with your child from the zoo. There will be a sign out at the school if you return on the bus, but want to leave with your child at that time.

Reminders for Chaperones:

• If you are one of the approved chaperones, please make sure the teacher knows if you plan to ride one of the school busses to and from the zoo with students and teachers OR meet us at the zoo.
• Chaperones meeting us at the zoo, we will be arriving at the south entrance by the zoo store parking lot. This is the lion lot on North 50th Street. We will arrive and leave from the south entrance. If you are meeting us at the zoo, please meet us at the south entrance (lion lot). Please arrive to the south entrance lion lot area between 9:15 and 9:25. You will sign in with Ms. Leandra at the entrance while we wait for the busses to arrive.
• Chaperones riding the bus, should arrive to school around 8:45AM. You will sign in at the office and then head to the classroom to pick up student lunches from your group and support the class in getting ready. Most chaperones will ride the bus with their group assuming there is space.
• A packet will be provided to you with a zoo map, chaperone details, your student group, and specific times. This will be provided by the classroom teacher either in the classroom before we leave or at the zoo entrance when they arrive.
• Please dress to be outside all day, you will be chaperoning a small group of kids exploring the zoo, so be prepared to be outside and for the weather. Younger siblings should not attend with you as a chaperone. That is a requirement of being a fieldtrip chaperone.
• Please bring a backpack as you will be carrying a small bag of first aide (band aids) and the student lunches from your group.
• Ms. Wheeler and Ms. Leandra will be there at the zoo entrance with the sign-in for chaperones meeting us at the zoo and to provide the chaperone stickers.

El Dia De Los Muertos at Viewlands

In art/Multilingual this month, students will be discussing and learning about the tradition of El Dia De Los Muertos and the cultural significance that it has within the Latinx community. Students will be using their personal connections, stories, and inspirations to create beautiful sugar skulls and paper tissue flowers. This topic has sparked powerful conversations while also providing a deeper understanding of how other cultures honor family through remembering rather than mourning. This unit will allow students to learn about symbolism and symmetry in their work. Our day-to-day work has created numerous opportunities to highlight the importance of both patience and practice as it relates to learning new skills and techniques. Displayed before you is an example of an Ofrenda which is used to display photos, items, or offerings that commemorate family members of the past. Many students donated their paper tissue flower to help brighten and decorate our official Viewlands Ofrenda.

This project is optional. Viewlands Elementary School respects the traditions and beliefs of all cultures. Students can reflect on a loved one or pet who has passed away. We focus on all the positive things we remember about the person or pet that made us love them so much and never forget them. This is a great way to learn a little more about our ancestors. If you wish to participate:

1. Decide who you want to remember for this celebration.

2. Focus on the positive things that remind you of your loved one.

3. Unleash your creativity by making a drawing that represents that loved one.

VEPTSA Updates

Fall Movie Night – Friday November 7, 5pm – 7:30pm

Join us for our annual movie night to watch Lilo & Stitch on Friday November 7, 5pm – 7:30pm. We will have pizza, healthy snacks, popcorn and drinks. Bring blankets, stuffies, and pillows for a cozy time. Note: this is not a drop off event. Kids should be accompanied by an adult.

Also, do you have Viewlands spiritwear that no longer fits? Or are you looking for a new piece to show your school pride? Our Spiritwear Exchange Program offers a way to recycle and reuse spiritwear within our community. Bring in gently used spiritwear that no longer fits, and exchange it for another item in your size. No spiritwear yet? No problem! Come by and pick out something to join in the school spirit!

24 de octubre….. 37 días de aprendizaje juntos este año escolar

¡Hola familias de Viewlands!

El clima otoñal está aquí, con algunos cielos azules frescos y frescos, días soleados y lluvia. La lluvia es parte de nuestro clima del noroeste del Pacífico. En Viewlands salimos a recreo, llueva o truene. Salimos a la calle en los recreos a menos que haya condiciones inseguras, como tormentas eléctricas, granizo o aguaceros torrenciales con áreas inundadas en el patio de recreo. ¡El tiempo de recreo fuera es importante! La próxima semana parece lluviosa.

Envíe a su hijo con un abrigo en los días más fríos o lluviosos. Recuerde etiquetar los abrigos y cualquier otra pertenencia con el nombre de su hijo. Etiquetar los artículos con su nombre nos ayuda a reunir a su hijo con los artículos dejados en la escuela y en los objetos perdidos desbordados.

Algunos aspectos destacados de mis visitas a las aulas y con los estudiantes esta semana incluyen: hablar sobre diferentes formas de hacer números y expandir esas ideas con los estudiantes de 1er grado; actividades de lanzamiento y captura en estaciones con niños de jardín de infantes en el grupo verde; estudiantes de 4º y 5º grado que trabajan en su investigación sobre las tribus nativas americanas y las regiones de los Estados Unidos; y hacer caléndulas con papel de seda en la clase de arte con estudiantes de 3er grado y colorear caléndulas con niños de jardín de infantes en el grupo amarillo.

Sus hijos son pensadores brillantes, inquisitivos y creativos. Continuaremos buscando formas de hacer que cada estudiante se sienta conocido, valorado y empoderado durante todo el año.

¡La excursión al zoológico es el viernes 31!

Nuestra excursión anual al zoológico es la próxima semana, el viernes 31 de octubre. Algunos recordatorios sobre nuestra excursión:

Información importante para las familias:

• Vamos al zoológico llueva o truene. Esto significa que será importante que los estudiantes usen ropa adecuada si llueve. Estamos afuera mientras estamos en el zoológico. Si su hijo necesita un abrigo, tenemos un número limitado de tallas en la escuela. Envíe un correo electrónico a la Sra. Lin en la oficina al lkmccormick@seattleschools.org
• Estaremos afuera y caminando y jugando mientras estamos en el zoológico. Asegúrese de que su hijo use zapatos cómodos que sean adecuados para estar afuera en nuestra aventura en el zoológico todo el día. ¡Por favor, no use espectáculos que se deslicen fácilmente o que no sean cómodos para caminar mucho!
• Los estudiantes que traigan almuerzos a casa, recuerden que comeremos afuera y NO tendremos acceso a cubiertos o servilletas, por lo que deben tener todo lo que necesitan para un almuerzo estilo picnic.
• El estudiante que solicitó un almuerzo escolar, tendrá un almuerzo estilo picnic de la escuela.
• Si su hijo se siente enfermo o tiene algún síntoma leve, debe quedarse en casa. Todos los estudiantes van al zoológico y estarán afuera y caminando la mayor parte del día.
• Vamos al zoológico el viernes 31 de octubre, como nuestra celebración de otoño. No nos disfrazamos ni organizamos fiestas de Halloween en la escuela. ¡Los estudiantes y las familias que celebran las tradiciones de Halloween pueden disfrutarlas por la noche!
• Los estudiantes deben llegar a tiempo a la escuela. Saldremos de la escuela entre las 9 y las 9:15 a.m. Los estudiantes que lleguen después de eso no podrán ir a la excursión y no habrá clases ni maestros en la escuela. ¡Por favor, llegue a tiempo!
• No regresaremos a la escuela hasta alrededor de la 1:30 p.m. No podremos acomodar recogidas anticipadas hasta después de la 1:45.
• Los padres / tutores que acompañan pueden firmar a sus hijos al final de la excursión al zoológico. Habrá un letrero en nuestra zona de recogida de autobuses en el zoológico si desea salir con su hijo del zoológico. Habrá un letrero en la escuela si regresa en el autobús, pero quiere irse con su hijo en ese momento.

Recordatorios para los acompañantes:

• Si usted es uno de los acompañantes aprobados, asegúrese de que el maestro sepa si planea viajar en uno de los autobuses escolares hacia y desde el zoológico con estudiantes y maestros O reunirse con nosotros en el zoológico.
• Los chaperones que nos reciben en el zoológico, llegaremos a la entrada sur por el estacionamiento de la tienda del zoológico. Este es el lote de leones en North 50th Street. Llegaremos y saldremos por la entrada sur. Si se reúne con nosotros en el zoológico, reúnase con nosotros en la entrada sur (lote de leones). Llegue al área del lote de leones de la entrada sur entre las 9:15 y las 9:25. Se registrará con la Sra. Leandra en la entrada mientras esperamos que lleguen los autobuses.
• Los acompañantes que viajan en el autobús deben llegar a la escuela alrededor de las 8:45 a.m. Se registrará en la oficina y luego se dirigirá al salón de clases para recoger los almuerzos de los estudiantes de su grupo y apoyar a la clase en la preparación. La mayoría de los chaperones viajarán en el autobús con su grupo asumiendo que hay espacio.
• Se le proporcionará un paquete con un mapa del zoológico, detalles del acompañante, su grupo de estudiantes y horarios específicos. Esto será proporcionado por el maestro del salón de clases, ya sea en el aula antes de que nos vayamos o en la entrada del zoológico cuando lleguen.
• Vístase para estar afuera todo el día, acompañará a un pequeño grupo de niños que exploran el zoológico, así que prepárese para estar afuera y para el clima. Los hermanos menores no deben asistir con usted como acompañante. Ese es un requisito para ser un acompañante de excursión.
• Traiga una mochila, ya que llevará una pequeña bolsa de primeros auxilios (curitas) y los almuerzos de los estudiantes de su grupo.
• La Sra. Wheeler y la Sra. Leandra estarán allí en la entrada del zoológico con el registro para que los chaperones se reúnan con nosotros en el zoológico y para proporcionar las calcomanías de los acompañantes.

El Día de los Muertos en Viewlands

En arte/multilingüe este mes, los estudiantes discutirán y aprenderán sobre la tradición de El Día de los Muertos y el significado cultural que tiene dentro de la comunidad latina. Los estudiantes usarán sus conexiones, historias e inspiraciones personales para crear hermosas calaveras de azúcar y flores de papel de papel. Este tema ha provocado conversaciones poderosas al mismo tiempo que proporciona una comprensión más profunda de cómo otras culturas honran a la familia a través del recuerdo en lugar del duelo. Esta unidad permitirá a los estudiantes aprender sobre el simbolismo y la simetría en su trabajo. Nuestro trabajo diario ha creado numerosas oportunidades para resaltar la importancia de la paciencia y la práctica en lo que respecta al aprendizaje de nuevas habilidades y técnicas. Se muestra ante usted un ejemplo de una ofrenda que se usa para mostrar fotos, artículos u ofrendas que conmemoran a miembros de la familia del pasado. Muchos estudiantes donaron su flor de papel para ayudar a alegrar y decorar nuestra ofrenda oficial de Viewlands.

Este proyecto es opcional. La Escuela Primaria Viewlands respeta las tradiciones y creencias de todas las culturas. Los estudiantes pueden reflexionar sobre un ser querido o una mascota que ha fallecido. Nos enfocamos en todas las cosas positivas que recordamos sobre la persona o mascota que nos hizo amarlos tanto y nunca los olvidamos. Esta es una excelente manera de aprender un poco más sobre nuestros antepasados. Si desea participar:

1. Decide a quién quieres recordar para esta celebración.

2. Concéntrese en las cosas positivas que le recuerdan a su ser querido.

3. Da rienda suelta a tu creatividad haciendo un dibujo que represente a ese ser querido.

Noche de cine de otoño – Viernes 7 de noviembre, 5pm – 7:30pm

Únase a nosotros para nuestra noche anual de cine para ver Lilo & Stitch el viernes 7 de noviembre, de 5 p.m. a 7:30 p.m. Tendremos pizza, snacks saludables, palomitas de maíz y bebidas. Traiga mantas, peluches y almohadas para pasar un rato acogedor. Nota: este no es un evento de entrega. Los niños deben estar acompañados por un adulto.

Además, ¿tienes ropa de espíritu de Viewlands que ya no te queda bien? ¿O estás buscando una nueva pieza para mostrar tu orgullo escolar? Nuestro Programa de Intercambio de Ropa Espiritual ofrece una forma de reciclar y reutilizar ropa espiritual dentro de nuestra comunidad. Traiga ropa de espíritu usada en buen estado que ya no le quede bien y cámbiela por otro artículo de su talla. ¿Aún no tienes ropa de espíritu? ¡No hay problema! ¡Ven y elige algo para unirte al espíritu de la escuela!
