December 12th…..66 days of learning together this school year

Hello Viewlands Families!

Next week is our last week of school in 2025. Friday, December 19th is an early dismissal. School ends next Friday at 1:25PM. Please make sure you have a plan for the early dismissal time. Busses will be an hour earlier than normal in the afternoon routes. Family pick up time is an hour earlier. After next week, there will be no school for two weeks for Winter Break. School will resume on Monday, January 5th.

This week our 3rd grade students interviewed Ms. Shafaq, our Viewlands Kitchen Manager, to learn more about her and an event that shaped her as a person. Learning about Ms. Shafaq, through conversations with the 3rd graders and reading their notes, was the big highlight of the week. You can read more about what the 3rd graders learned about Ms. Shafaq in a feature in this newsletter.

A few other highlights from my visits in classrooms and with students this week include: talking about problems and solutions with 1st graders during science; learning about gravity and grappling with our understanding of gravity with 4th and 5th graders; talking about character traits and character feelings to help us infer what a character might do in a story using text evidence with 3rd graders; and talking with kindergarteners about heart words, what they are and why we learn them.

Your children are bright, inquisitive, and creative thinkers. We will continue to seek ways to make every student feel known, valued, and empowered through the year.

Ms. Shafaq, Viewlands Kitchen Manager

The 3rd graders interviewed Ms. Shafaq this week to learn more about her and an event that helped shaped her as a person. The 3rd graders shared some of what they learned with me. It was wonderful for the students to learn more about a person in our community, asking questions, listening to the answers, asking follow up questions, and taking notes. In my conversations with some of the 3rd graders, I was inspired by their engagement in this learning experience and enthusiasm for learning about a member of our community. Ms. Shafaq and her daughter Kaniz answered questions from the 3rd graders. This is what I learned from the 3rd graders.

Getting to Know Ms. Shafaq:

• Ms. Shafaq is from Pakistan. She lived in Pakistan with her family until she was 22 years old.
• An event that shaped her as a person, was spending time with her dad and taking care of a tiger.
• They raised an albino tiger. His name was Bush. Bush eventually went to live in the zoo in Pakistan.
• This is a big part of her identity. That experience inspired her creativity and made her feel proud.
• Her dad was a taxidermist. One of her brother’s is also a taxidermist.
• When she was 22 the family moved to the United States. Her parents live in Canada now.
• She loved school.
• She went to college art school and loves to create.
• The lunchroom food posters in our Viewlands kitchen were designed and made by Ms. Shafaq.

12 de diciembre….. 66 días de aprendizaje juntos este curso escolar

¡Hola, familias de Viewlands!

La semana que viene es nuestra última semana de clase en 2025. El viernes 19 de diciembre es una salida anticipada. El colegio termina el próximo viernes a la 1:25 PM. Por favor, asegúrate de tener un plan para la hora de salida anticipada. Los autobuses llegarán una hora antes de lo habitual en las rutas de la tarde. La hora de recogida en familia es una hora antes. Después de la próxima semana, no habrá clase durante dos semanas por las vacaciones de invierno. Las clases se reanudarán el lunes 5 de enero.

Esta semana, nuestros alumnos de 3º de primaria entrevistaron a la Sra. Shafaq, nuestra responsable de cocina en Viewlands, para conocer más sobre ella y sobre un evento que la ha marcado como persona. Conocer a la señorita Shafaq, a través de conversaciones con los alumnos de 3º y leyendo sus apuntes, fue lo más destacado de la semana. Puedes leer más sobre lo que los alumnos de 3º curso aprendieron acerca de la Sra. Shafaq en un reportaje de este boletín.

Algunos otros momentos destacados de mis visitas a las aulas y con estudiantes esta semana incluyen: hablar sobre problemas y soluciones con alumnos de primero durante ciencias; aprender sobre la gravedad y cómo comprender la gravedad con alumnos de 4º y 5º curso; hablar sobre rasgos y sentimientos de carácter para ayudarnos a inferir qué podría hacer un personaje en una historia usando evidencia textual con alumnos de tercero; Y hablar con niños de infantil sobre palabras del corazón, qué son y por qué las aprendemos.

Tus hijos son inteligentes, curiosos y pensadores creativos. Seguiremos buscando formas de que cada estudiante se sienta conocido, valorado y empoderado a lo largo del año.

Los alumnos de 3º de primaria entrevistaron esta semana a la señora Shafaq para conocer más sobre ella y un evento que ayudó a formarla como persona. Los alumnos de tercero compartieron conmigo parte de lo que aprendieron. Fue maravilloso para los estudiantes conocer mejor a una persona de nuestra comunidad, haciendo preguntas, escuchando las respuestas, haciendo preguntas de seguimiento y tomando notas. En mis conversaciones con algunos de los alumnos de tercero, me inspiró su implicación en esta experiencia de aprendizaje y su entusiasmo por conocer a un miembro de nuestra comunidad. La señora Shafaq y su hija Kaniz respondieron a las preguntas de los alumnos de tercero. Esto es lo que aprendí de los alumnos de tercero.

Conociendo a la Sra. Shafaq:

• La señora Shafaq es de Pakistán. Vivió en Pakistán con su familia hasta los 22 años.
• Un acontecimiento que la formó como persona fue pasar tiempo con su padre y cuidar de un tigre.
• Criaron un tigre albino. Se llamaba Bush. Finalmente, Bush se fue a vivir al zoológico de Pakistán.
• Esto es una gran parte de su identidad. Esa experiencia inspiró su creatividad y la hizo sentirse orgullosa.
• Su padre era taxidermista. Uno de sus hermanos también es taxidermista.
• Cuando tenía 22 años, la familia se mudó a Estados Unidos. Sus padres viven ahora en Canadá.
• Le encantaba el colegio.
• Fue a la universidad en una escuela de arte y le encanta crear.
• Los carteles de comida del comedor en nuestra cocina de Viewlands fueron diseñados y hechos por la señora Shafaq.
