Hello Viewlands Families!
Today was a day of inspiration, fun, and connection. It was the 100th day of school for our 1st through 5th graders! It was a day to let our community members know we care! It was also a day of inspiration, thanks to our 2nd grade students and our 2nd grade teachers. Our 2nd grade team led our Gathering for Positive Change assembly and community march at the end of our day together. This was a culmination of learning they have been doing in class and a moment to honor leaders, like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Cesar Chavez. They sang, they spoke, and they led with passion and love in their hearts! Every 2nd grader today was a leader for our whole 2nd grade community. It was inspirational.
The Gathering for Positive Change assembly and Community March was definitely the highlight of the week. I am incredibly proud to be a part of this community and bear witness today to the 2nd grade leaders, along with a few 4th and 5th grade students that supported. A couple other highlights from my visits in classrooms and with students this week: hearing about the 3rd grade fieldtrip to the Burke Museum this week; reading with a kindergarten student; and being part of the community meeting in Mr. W’s 1st grade class.
Your children are bright, inquisitive, and creative thinkers. We will continue to seek ways to make every student feel known, valued, and empowered through the year.
A reminder that there is no school next week for the President’s Day holiday and mid-winter break. School will resume on Monday, February 24th. Student devices were sent home in case there was any weather-related challenges when we return. This is not anticipated. Please remember to return devices and chargers to school on Monday, February 24th. Families are responsible for devices and chargers when they are at home, which includes paying for them when lost or damaged.

Today VEPTSA celebrated the Viewlands staff with a bagel bar and delicious treats. Volunteers handed out fun stickers to students today to share with their favorite staff members and then set up a fabulous bagel bar in the staff lounge for staff to visit. It was very special! Staff felt loved! Thank you to all the families that volunteered, provided things for the bagel bar, and supported VEPTSA in this staff appreciation day! It was kind and heartfelt and staff appreciated it!
Viewlands Yearbook Cover Contest
VEPTSA and the Viewlands Office Team host a Viewlands cover art contest annually. This is happening right now. The cover art contest is open the whole month of February. This could be a great activity for mid-winter break. Every submission will be featured in a small way in the yearbook as borders and will be displayed in the main office. The winning entry will be our yearbook cover for the 2024-2025 school year. The winner also receives a free copy of the yearbook.
- Paper: 8.5” x 11” portrait
- Details: Artwork must include an orca. Write the student’s full name and teacher’s name on the back in pencil.
Students can submit their cover art to Ms. Lin in the office. The last day to submit an entry is Friday, February 28th!
Salmon in Schools
Our salmon eggs hatched in the past couple weeks. They are now in the alevin stage. The 4th and 5th graders are being good stewards of the salmon and the tank. Our 4th and 5th grade students have already hosted a few younger grade classes to teach them about the salmon. This will continue when we return from break. We will have the salmon until they are all fry, eating, and thriving. Typically we bring them to the imprint pond at Carkeek around the end of march/beginning of April.
Girls in STEM Opportunity: Free Event at UW
There is an event on Saturday February 22nd at the University Washington focused on girls in STEM. The event is hosted by Women in Chemical Engineering at UW. The goal is to expose more girls and girls of color ages 6-15 to STEM. The event is open to all genders and ages and is free.

Viewlands Orca Cup Soccer – Saturday, March 8, 2-4pm (Sandel Park, 9053 1st Ave NW)
Save the date for the annual Viewlands Orca Cup Soccer event! This is a free community event open to all Viewlands families. The event includes some warm up, fun challenge drills, and friendly soccer games. We will have energetic music, a photo op with a custom Orca Cup trophy, stickers, and snacks. Families and friends are encouraged to cheer on the young athletes. Note: This is not a drop off event, adults must accompany their children. See Konstella > Calendar event for more details. ¡Hola familias de Viewlands!
Hoy fue un día de inspiración, diversión y conexión. ¡Fue el día número 100 de clases para nuestros estudiantes de 1º a 5º grado! ¡Fue un día para que los miembros de nuestra comunidad supieran que nos importa! También fue un día de inspiración, gracias a nuestros alumnos de 2º grado y a nuestros profesores de 2º grado. Nuestro equipo de 2º grado dirigió nuestra asamblea de Gathering for Positive Change y la marcha comunitaria al final de nuestro día juntos. Esta fue la culminación del aprendizaje que han estado haciendo en clase y un momento para honrar a líderes, como Martin Luther King, Jr. y César Chávez. ¡Cantaron, hablaron y lideraron con pasión y amor en sus corazones! Cada estudiante de 2º grado hoy fue un líder para toda nuestra comunidad de 2º grado. Fue inspirador.
La asamblea de Gathering for Positive Change y la Marcha Comunitaria fueron definitivamente lo más destacado de la semana. Estoy increíblemente orgullosa de ser parte de esta comunidad y dar testimonio hoy de los líderes de2º grado, junto con algunos estudiantes de 4º y 5º grado que apoyaron. Un par de otros puntos destacados de mis visitas a las aulas y con los estudiantes esta semana: escuchar sobre la excursión de 3er grado al Museo Burke esta semana; leer con un estudiante de jardín de infantes; y ser parte de la reunión comunitaria en la clase de 1er grado del Sr. W.
Sus hijos son pensadores brillantes, curiosos y creativos. Continuaremos buscando formas de hacer que cada estudiante se sienta conocido, valorado y empoderado durante todo el año.
Un recordatorio de que no hay clases la próxima semana por el feriado del Día del Presidente y las vacaciones de mediados de invierno. Las clases se reanudarán el lunes 24 de febrero. Los dispositivos de los estudiantes fueron enviados a casa en caso de que hubiera algún problema relacionado con el clima cuando regresáramos. Esto no está previsto. Recuerde devolver los dispositivos y cargadores a la escuela el lunes 24 de febrero. Las familias son responsables de los dispositivos y cargadores cuando están en casa, lo que incluye pagarlos cuando se pierden o se dañan.

Hoy, VEPTSA celebró al personal de Viewlands con una barra de bagels y deliciosas golosinas. Los voluntarios repartieron divertidas calcomanías a los estudiantes hoy para que las compartieran con sus miembros favoritos del personal y luego montaron un fabuloso bar de bagels en el salón del personal para que el personal lo visitara. ¡Fue muy especial! ¡El personal se sintió querido! ¡Gracias a todas las familias que se ofrecieron como voluntarias, proporcionaron cosas para la barra de bagels y apoyaron a VEPTSA en este día de agradecimiento al personal! ¡Fue amable y sincero y el personal lo apreció!
Concurso De Portadas Del Anuario De Viewlands
VEPTSA y el equipo de la oficina de Viewlands organizan anualmente un concurso de arte de portadas de Viewlands. Esto está sucediendo ahora mismo. El concurso de portadas está abierto todo el mes de febrero. Esta podría ser una gran actividad para las vacaciones de mediados de invierno. Cada presentación se presentará de manera pequeña en el anuario como bordes y se mostrará en la oficina principal. La obra ganadora será la portada de nuestro anuario para el año escolar 2024-2025. El ganador también recibe una copia gratuita del anuario.

- Detalles: La obra de arte debe incluir una orca. Escriba el nombre completo del estudiante y el nombre del maestro en el reverso con lápiz.

Salmón en las escuelas
Nuestros huevos de salmón eclosionaron en las últimas dos semanas. Ahora están en la etapa alevin. Los alumnos de 4º y 5º grado están siendo buenos administradores del salmón y del tanque. Nuestros estudiantes de 4º y 5º grado ya han organizado algunas clases de grado más joven para enseñarles sobre el salmón. Esto continuará cuando regresemos del descanso. Tendremos los salmones hasta que estén todos fritos, comiendo y prosperando. Por lo general, los llevamos al estanque de impresión en Carkeek a fines de marzo o principios de abril.
Oportunidades Para Ninas En STEM: Evento gratuito en la UW
El sábado 22 de febrero en la Universidad de Washington habrá un evento centrado en las niñas en STEM. El evento es organizado por Mujeres en Ingeniería Química de la UW. El objetivo es exponer a más niñas y niñas de color de 6 a 15 años a STEM. El evento está abierto a todos los géneros y edades y es gratuito.
