Hello Viewlands Families!
A sneak peek at those beautiful blue sky sunny spring days that we all love visited us this week at the end of February, which was lovely, and a welcomed surprise after the cold and snow earlier this month.
This week we had a special guest artist here from Arts Impact. This is part of our creative advantage additional art learning opportunities. For the past 2 years this was funded through the Creative Advantage grant. We will not have that grant funding but are exploring other grant funding associated with Creative Advantage to continue this expansion of the arts at Viewlands. Mr. Pleasant from Arts Impact was here working with students during P.E. this week. He focuses on rhythm, body movement, and dance with a strong infusion of loving yourself and being your authentic and best self. Mr. Pleasant has visited Viewlands the past 3 years. He has made strong connections with students and exposes them to a different art medium than visual arts. We love having Mr. Pleasant at Viewlands.
A few highlights from my visits in classrooms and with students this week: joining art class with 2nd grade and listening to 2nd graders share what they think collaboration was; reading with a few kindergarteners; talking and exploring world geography with 3rd graders in Ms. Meagher’s class; and the big highlight of the week was having Mr. Pleasant back at Viewlands from Art Impact!
Your children are bright, inquisitive, and creative thinkers. We will continue to seek ways to make every student feel known, valued, and empowered through the year.

RAMADAN
Ramadan begins this evening, Friday February 28th and continues through Saturday, March 29th. Eid al-Fitr is a Muslim holiday to mark the end of Ramadan, Saturday March 29th through Sunday March 30th. To our Muslim families that honor Ramadan, Ramadan Mubarak.
If your child will be fasting during Ramadan please let our office team and the classroom teacher know. We will make sure they have access to an alternative location and activity during lunch based on their preferences. In addition, we will be able to send food home if needed for them to eat after sunset.
If your child needs a place for the early afternoon prayer (Dhuhr) associated with Ramadan, please let our office team and the classroom teacher know. We will make sure they have access to a private location.
ADVANCED LEARNING
The advanced learning department in Seattle Public Schools has sent out eligibility letters for students that recently qualified for advanced leaning. A few families have asked if they need to notify the school or complete a registration. Notification or registration is not required. The updated eligibility designations will be provided to the school by the advanced learning team, these designations will be listed in their profile in our data base system, Power Schools.
Advanced learning is changing in Seattle Public Schools. A few families asked if there was a separate classroom, separate staffing for delivery of advanced learning, or different curriculum provided to the neighborhood school for advanced learning. The answer to this is no. There is not separate staffing, or a different curriculum provided for advanced learning. The learning activities or opportunities for students that qualify for advanced learning are provided by general education staffing allocated to the school and with the support and help at times from volunteers, and within the same district adopted curriculum used for all students.

MATH Learning and Competition Event at Lincoln High School
Lincoln High School Math Competition is an annual contest held for elementary school students in the Seattle area. It is targeted for 4th-5th grade students, but anyone younger can also compete. The competition has two individual rounds: Super Sprint and Mental Mania, and two team rounds: Team Tumble and Lynx Lightening Round. The overall difficulty can be compared to beginning MathCounts and is a great introductory competition for children interested in mathematics. The competition is free. If there is a 4th and 5th grade parent interested in bringing a Viewlands team, reach out to the family ambassador for your class and/or the classroom teacher.

PTA Volunteers Needed!
Thank you so much to all of you who are currently volunteering or have volunteered in the past! We are always looking for volunteers. We have some needs for this year and are starting to plan for next year. There are a huge variety of roles with varying time commitments. Viewlands Orca Cup Soccer – Saturday, March 8, 2-4pm (Sandel Park, 9053 1st Ave NW)
This is a free community event open to all Viewlands families. This is not a drop off event, adults must accompany their children. The event includes some warm up, fun challenge drills, and friendly soccer games. We will have energetic music, a photo op with a custom Orca Cup trophy, stickers, snacks, and special guest … Ollie the Viewlands Orca. Note: See Konstella > Calendar event for more details. ¡Hola familias de Viewlands!
Un vistazo a esos hermosos días soleados de primavera de cielo azul que todos amamos nos visitó esta semana a fines de febrero, lo cual fue encantador y una grata sorpresa después del frío y la nieve a principios de este mes.
Esta semana tuvimos aquí a un artista invitado especial de Arts Impact. Esto es parte de nuestra ventaja creativa: oportunidades adicionales de aprendizaje de arte. Durante los últimos 2 años, esto se financió a través de la subvención Creative Advantage. No tendremos esa subvención, pero estamos explorando otros fondos de subvención asociados con Creative Advantage para continuar esta expansión de las artes en Viewlands. El Sr. Pleasant de Arts Impact estuvo aquí trabajando con los estudiantes durante la educación física esta semana. Se enfoca en el ritmo, el movimiento corporal y el baile con una fuerte infusión de amarte a ti mismo y ser tu auténtico y mejor yo. El Sr. Pleasant ha visitado Viewlands los últimos 3 años. Ha establecido fuertes conexiones con los estudiantes y los expone a un medio artístico diferente al de las artes visuales. Nos encanta tener a Mr. Pleasant en Viewlands.
Algunos aspectos destacados de mis visitas en las aulas y con los estudiantes esta semana: unirme a la clase de arte con 2º grado y escuchar a los estudiantes de 2º grado compartir lo que creen que fue la colaboración; leer con algunos niños de jardín de infantes; hablar y explorar geografía mundial con estudiantes de 3er grado en la clase de la Sra. Meagher; y lo más destacado de la semana fue tener a Mr. Pleasant de vuelta en Viewlands de Art Impact!
Sus hijos son pensadores brillantes, curiosos y creativos. Continuaremos buscando formas de hacer que cada estudiante se sienta conocido, valorado y empoderado durante todo el año.

Nos aseguraremos de que tengan acceso a un lugar y actividad alternativos durante el almuerzo según sus preferencias. Además, podremos enviar comida a casa si es necesario para que coman después de la puesta del sol.
Si su hijo necesita un lugar para la oración de la tarde (Dhuhr) asociada con el Ramadán, infórmeselo a nuestro equipo de oficina y al maestro del aula. Nos aseguraremos de que tengan acceso a una ubicación privada.
APRENDIZAJE AVANZADO
El departamento de aprendizaje avanzado de las Escuelas Públicas de Seattle ha enviado cartas de elegibilidad para los estudiantes que recientemente calificaron para el aprendizaje avanzado. Algunas familias han preguntado si necesitan notificar a la escuela o completar una inscripción. No se requiere notificación ni registro. Las designaciones de elegibilidad actualizadas serán proporcionadas a la escuela por el equipo de aprendizaje avanzado, estas designaciones se enumerarán en su perfil en nuestro sistema de base de datos, Power Schools.
El aprendizaje avanzado está cambiando en las Escuelas Públicas de Seattle. Algunas familias preguntaron si había un salón de clases separado, personal separado para la impartición de aprendizaje avanzado o un plan de estudios diferente proporcionado a la escuela del vecindario para el aprendizaje avanzado. La respuesta a esto es no. No hay personal separado, ni se proporciona un plan de estudios diferente para el aprendizaje avanzado. Las actividades u oportunidades de aprendizaje para los estudiantes que califican para el aprendizaje avanzado son proporcionadas por el personal de educación general asignado a la escuela y con el apoyo y la ayuda a veces de voluntarios, y dentro del mismo plan de estudios adoptado por el distrito utilizado para todos los estudiantes.

Evento de Aprendizaje y Competencia de MATEMÁTICAS en Lincoln High School
Lincoln High School Math Competition es un concurso anual que se lleva a cabo para estudiantes de primaria en el área de Seattle. Está dirigido a estudiantes de 4º y 5º grado, pero cualquier persona más joven también puede competir. La competición cuenta con dos rondas individuales: Super Sprint y Mental Mania, y dos rondas por equipos: Team Tumble y Lynx Lightening Round. La dificultad general se puede comparar con la de los principiantes de MathCounts y es una gran competencia introductoria para los niños interesados en las matemáticas. El concurso es gratuito.
