February 6th….95 days of learning together this school year

Hello Viewlands Families!

This week was Black Lives Matter at school and the beginning of Black History month. The theme this year was Local to Global: Loving Engagement in the Age of Change. Next week on Friday we will have a student-led assembly to honor Back History month and MLK Jr’s dream. After the student-led assembly we will do a school community march focused on peace! The community march will happen around 1:40-1:45 (after the assembly). It typically lasts around 20 minutes as we march around the school. Families are welcome to cheer us on along the trail behind the school or in the entry pavilion area outside.

Please note next Friday, we will be doing our assembly and community march in the afternoon. We will not be able to accommodate early dismissal after 1:30. If your child needs early dismissal, it will need to be 1:30 or before. If you come to cheer us on at the community march, you will need to wait for the regular dismissal time to pick up your students.

On Thursday this week we had our school Global Reading Challenge competition with 4th and 5th graders that chose to participate. The Global Reading Challenge is a reading incentive program supported by Seattle Public Library in partnership with Seattle Public Schools. Viewlands loves being a part of the Global Reading Challenge. Forty-two 4th and 5th graders participated this year on six teams. The Reading Snow Leopards are the Viewlands 2026 Global Reading Challenge school winners.

Congrats to the Reading Snow Leopards! This team will be representing Viewlands at a district level competition in March.

The Global Reading Challenge was a big highlight of the week. A few other highlights from my visits in classrooms and with students this week include: 4th and 5th graders supporting 2nd graders with ideas for posters for our community march for peace next week; learning more about the topics of the 3rd graders opinion pieces in Ms. Meagher’s class; and teaching PE today with Teacher Nelson’s Kindergarten class, Ms. Norma’s 2nd grade class, and Ms. Schilke’s 4th/5th grade class.

Your children are bright, inquisitive, and creative thinkers. We will continue to seek ways to make every student feel known, valued, and empowered through the year.

Viewlands Friendship Day, Friday 2/13/2026

There are many different viewpoints, opinions, and preferences from our families on how February 14th Valentines Day is or is not recognized at school. At Viewlands, Feb 14th, or the school day closest when it is on a weekend, is referred to as a “Friendship Day”. The exact way teachers decide to celebrate ‘Friendship Day” varies. Valentines Day does not have historical context that connects to elementary learning in core subjects, but can be a way to connect to our social-emotional learning centered around friendship or a way to acknowledge our classmates/peers.

• If a classroom teacher chooses to do something to celebrate “Friendship Day”, it is something handled in the classroom so all students can participate (i.e. friendship cards, pictures, compliments for every student). I encourage teachers to communicate ahead of time of their plan for this day. We want this day to feel successful for all students.
• We do not want candy or high sugar treats from home as part of any friendship day celebrations. This is because families have different opinions and preferences around candy/high sugar treats and those types of snacks/treats can impact the emotional regulation and social behavior responses for some students, as well as how students respond to each other.
• When classrooms do something to honor or celebrate Friendship Day, the goal is to connect to classroom community building that our educators are working to cultivate throughout the year and social-emotional learning around friendships and how to be a kind, positive, and productive member of a community.

Viewlands Yearbook Cover Art Contest

VEPTSA and the Viewlands Office Team host a Viewlands cover art contest annually. The cover art contest is open the whole month of February. This could be a great activity now or over mid-winter break. Every submission will be featured in a small way in the yearbook as borders and will be displayed in the main office. The winning entry will be our yearbook cover for the 2025-2026 school year.

• Paper: 8.5” x 11” portrait (only portrait oriented artwork can be considered)
• Details: Artwork must include an orca. Write the student’s full name and teacher’s name on the back in pencil.

Students can submit their cover art to Ms. Lin in the office. The last day to submit an entry is Friday, February 27th!

Lunar New Year 2026: The Year of the Horse at Viewlands

Around the Viewlands campus students will be discussing and learning about the tradition of Lunar New Year and the cultural significance that it has within the Asian community. This topic has sparked powerful conversations while also providing a deeper understanding of how other cultures honor family and community through celebration. In art class, students will be using their personal connections, stories, and inspirations to create bright paper lanterns that represent good fortune and joy for the entire Viewlands community. This unit will allow students to learn about color, symbolism, and pattern in their work and has created opportunities to highlight the importance of collaboration.

As an extension to our classroom learning, we are inviting students to share their knowledge and experiences of the Lunar New Year. Here are a few ideas If you wish to participate

1. Bring in a photo, writing or drawing of how you and your family celebrate Lunar New Year.

2. Reflect on a wish or goal you have for the Year of the Horse.

3. Unleash your creativity by making a drawing or decoration that represents the qualities of a horse; energetic, independent, and intelligent.

This work will be on display along with our lanterns. Please write your name and classroom teacher’s name on your work. You can turn this into the office or your teacher (they will make sure it gets to Ms. B, our art teacher). This project is optional; Viewlands Elementary School respects the traditions and beliefs of all cultures.

New Superintendent Shuldiner Community Engagement Tour

The new superintendent started Monday, February 2nd. He has organized seven community conversations centered in in the School Board Director districts and a city-wide virtual community conversation. Superintendent Shuldiner has expressed that the community meetings will be an opportunity to connect, share, and dream big together.

We all want Seattle Public Schools to be successful for ALL students. All families are encouraged to share their ideas and connect with new leadership by being part of a community conversations! Viewlands is part of district 1, so the closest location to our attendance zone is at James Baldwin, but you can attend a different one if that location and time frame work better for you!

Seeking Volunteers for VEPTSA’s Nominating Committee

The PTA is seeking 3–4 volunteers to serve on our VEPTSA Officer Nominating Committee. This small group will help recruit and recommend PTA Officers for the 2026–27 school year. We especially encourage families who are newer to Viewlands, or who are interested in getting more involved in shaping our school community, to consider joining.

¡Hola, familias de Viewlands!

Esta semana fue Black Lives Matter en el colegio y el comienzo del mes de la Historia Negra. El tema de este año fue de lo local a lo global: Amorosa participación en la era del cambio. La próxima semana, el viernes, celebraremos una asamblea dirigida por estudiantes para honrar el Mes de la Historia y el sueño de MLK Jr. Después de la asamblea dirigida por estudiantes, haremos una marcha comunitaria escolar centrada en la paz. La marcha comunitaria tendrá lugar alrededor de la 1:40-1:45 (después de la asamblea). Normalmente dura unos 20 minutos mientras caminamos por el colegio. Las familias son bienvenidas a animarnos a lo largo del sendero detrás de la escuela o en la zona del pabellón de entrada exterior.

Por favor, tened en cuenta que el próximo viernes celebraremos nuestra asamblea y marcha comunitaria por la tarde. No podremos permitir la salida anticipada después de la 1:30. Si tu hijo necesita salida temprana, tendrá que ser a la 1:30 o antes. Si vienes a animarnos en la marcha comunitaria, tendrás que esperar a la hora habitual de salida para recoger a tus alumnos.

El jueves de esta semana tuvimos la competición Global Reading Challenge de nuestro colegio con alumnos de 4º y 5º de primaria que eligieron participar. El Desafío Global de Lectura es un programa de incentivos a la lectura apoyado por la Biblioteca Pública de Seattle en colaboración con las Escuelas Públicas de Seattle. A Viewlands le encanta formar parte del Global Reading Challenge. Cuarenta y dos alumnos de 4º y 5º de primaria participaron este año en seis equipos. Los Reading Snow Leopards son los ganadores del Viewlands Global Reading Challenge 2026.

¡Enhorabuena a los Leopardos de las Nieves de Reading! Este equipo representará a Viewlands en una competición a nivel distrital en marzo.

El Global Reading Challenge fue uno de los grandes momentos destacados de la semana. Algunos otros momentos destacados de mis visitas a las aulas y con estudiantes esta semana incluyen: alumnos de 4º y 5º de primaria apoyando a los de 2º con ideas para carteles para nuestra marcha comunitaria por la paz la próxima semana; aprender más sobre los temas de los artículos de opinión de los alumnos de tercer curso en la clase de la Sra. Meagher; y enseñando educación física hoy con la clase de Infantil de la profesora Nelson, la clase de 2º de la Sra. Norma y la clase de 4º/5º de la Sra. Schilke.

Tus hijos son inteligentes, curiosos y pensadores creativos. Seguiremos buscando formas de que cada estudiante se sienta conocido, valorado y empoderado a lo largo del año.

Día de la Amistad de Viewlands, viernes 13/02/2026

Existen muchos puntos de vista, opiniones y preferencias diferentes entre nuestras familias sobre cómo se reconoce o no el Día de San Valentín del 14 de febrero en el colegio. En Viewlands, el 14 de febrero, o el día escolar más cercano cuando es fin de semana, se denomina “Día de la Amistad”. La forma exacta en que los profesores deciden celebrar el ‘Día de la Amistad’ varía. San Valentín no tiene un contexto histórico que conecte con el aprendizaje básico en materias básicas, pero puede ser una forma de conectar con nuestro aprendizaje socioemocional centrado en la amistad o una forma de reconocer a nuestros compañeros o compañeros.

• Si un profesor de aula decide hacer algo para celebrar el “Día de la Amistad”, es algo que se gestiona en el aula para que todos los alumnos puedan participar (por ejemplo, tarjetas de amistad, fotos, cumplidos para cada alumno). Animo a los profesores a comunicar con antelación su plan para este día. Queremos que este día sea exitoso para todos los estudiantes.
• No queremos caramelos ni golosinas con alto contenido de azúcar de casa como parte de ninguna celebración del Día de la Amistad. Esto se debe a que las familias tienen opiniones y preferencias diferentes sobre los caramelos o los dulces con alto contenido en azúcar, y ese tipo de snacks pueden afectar la regulación emocional y las respuestas sociales de algunos estudiantes, así como la forma en que los estudiantes responden entre sí.
• Cuando las aulas hacen algo para honrar o celebrar el Día de la Amistad, el objetivo es conectar con la construcción de comunidad en el aula que nuestros educadores trabajan para cultivar a lo largo del año y el aprendizaje socioemocional en torno a las amistades y cómo ser un miembro amable, positivo y productivo de una comunidad.

Concurso de Arte de Portadas del Anuario Viewlands

VEPTSA y el equipo de Viewlands Office organizan anualmente un concurso de portadas de Viewlands. El concurso de portadas está abierto durante todo el mes de febrero. Esto podría ser una gran actividad ahora o durante las vacaciones de invierno. Cada envío aparecerá de forma pequeña en el anuario como bordes y se exhibirá en la oficina principal. La obra ganadora será la portada del anuario para el curso 2025-2026.

• Papel: 8,5″ x 11″ retrato (solo se pueden considerar obras orientadas a retratos)
• Detalles: La obra debe incluir una orca. Escribe el nombre completo del alumno y el del profesor en la parte trasera con lápiz.

Los estudiantes pueden enviar su portada a la Sra. Lin en la oficina. ¡El último día para enviar una participación es viernes 27 de febrero!

Año Nuevo Lunar 2026: El Año del Caballo en Viewlands

En el campus de Viewlands, los estudiantes debatirán y aprenderán sobre la tradición del Año Nuevo Lunar y el significado cultural que tiene dentro de la comunidad asiática. Este tema ha generado conversaciones poderosas y también ha proporcionado una comprensión más profunda de cómo otras culturas honran a la familia y la comunidad a través de la celebración. En la clase de arte, los estudiantes utilizarán sus conexiones personales, historias e inspiraciones para crear farolillos de papel brillantes que representen la buena fortuna y la alegría para toda la comunidad de Viewlands. Esta unidad permitirá a los estudiantes aprender sobre el color, el simbolismo y el patrón en su trabajo, y ha creado oportunidades para destacar la importancia de la colaboración.

Como extensión de nuestro aprendizaje en el aula, invitamos a los estudiantes a compartir sus conocimientos y experiencias del Año Nuevo Lunar. Aquí tienes algunas ideas si quieres participar

Nueva gira de participación comunitaria del Superintendente de Shuldiner

El nuevo superintendente comenzó el lunes 2 de febrero. Ha organizado siete conversaciones comunitarias centradas en los distritos del Director de la Junta Escolar y una conversación comunitaria virtual a nivel de ciudad. El superintendente Shuldiner ha expresado que las reuniones comunitarias serán una oportunidad para conectar, compartir y soñar a lo grande juntos.

Todos queremos que las Escuelas Públicas de Seattle tengan éxito para TODOS los estudiantes. ¡Se anima a todas las familias a compartir sus ideas y conectar con nuevos líderes formando parte de conversaciones comunitarias! Viewlands forma parte del distrito 1, así que la ubicación más cercana a nuestra zona de asistencia está en James Baldwin, pero puedes asistir a otra si esa ubicación y horario te convienen mejor.
