Hello Viewlands Families!

This week started off on Monday with an incredible all school assembly celebrating dance, music, and St. Paddy’s Day. One of our very own Viewlands students is a member of the Irish dance team at Tara Academy of Irish Dance studio. As part of their community service and to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day, dancers at the studio spend the entire day and evening performing for free at schools and senior living centers. Viewlands was lucky to be on the schools they visited. Our Viewlands students were an exceptional audience and the dancing was wonderful. Thank you our student and her family for giving Viewlands this opportunity to be one of the schools where they performed!

In addition to the assembly Monday, on Tuesday, we had a guest author visit for our Kindergarten through 3^rd graders. Leslie Booth, an author, visited Viewlands and shared about her creative practice as a children’s book author in an assembly.

The Irish dancing assembly Monday was a big highlight. A few other highlights from my visits in classrooms and with students this week: talking about and exploring origami with a 1^st grader and a 5^th grader; watching a 5^th grader practice his leadership skills by reading with and supporting a kindergartener; exploring 10’s and 1’s and skip counting in English and Spanish with a few 1^st graders; and sharing excitement with some of the K-3 students after guest author, Leslie Booth, visited Viewlands.

Your children are bright, inquisitive, and creative thinkers. We will continue to seek ways to make every student feel known, valued, and empowered through the year.

Yearbook Cover Art Winners

Similar to the last few years, we had beautiful cover art submissions. The creativity of our students is wonderful. The time and effort the 33 student artists invested in their entries was clear. We loved every single entry! All entries will be featured in the yearbook.

This year we had a winner and a four-way tie for 2^nd place. Our winner will be the cover of the yearbook. All four of the entries that tied for 2^nd place will be featured on the back cover of the yearbook. All other entries will be featured in small ways inside the yearbook.

The winners were announced at school on Friday.

Salmon In Schools at Viewlands: Our Salmon Fry

Our salmon are actively swimming around the tank, all have transitioned from alevin to the fry stage. Our 4^th and 5^th graders and Mr. Arango continue to do the water testing in the salmon tank for a healthy water environment for our salmon fry and feed the salmon 3-4 times per day. It is always exciting once they are to the fry stage!

As previously shared, Viewlands was asked to be part of a documentary about the vital relationships between people, nature and food systems in the Seattle area, as one school participating in the Salmon in Schools project. The documentary, Feeding the Sound, will be a two-part documentary featuring voices of farmers, community leaders, environmental advocates, and educators. The goal is to connect people to the food sources through lived stories and voices of those dedicated to “protecting natural resources, advocating for food justice, and creating sustainable pathways for future generations.” The documentary is being directed by Xochitl Clare. Dr. Clare is a Postdoctoral fellow at the Padilla-Gamino Lab at the University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences. She is a performer, a director of film, writer, and researcher. Dr. Clare considers herself a “storyteller of the sea”. As part of this documentary, they will be filming parts of the 4^th and 5^th grade fieldtrip to Carkeek to release our salmon in the imprint pond on April 9^th.

Family Leaderships Opportunities and Volunteering at School

Our Viewlands community is at its best when the whole community is working together and thriving. This week many gathered on Wednesday to celebrate public school and Viewlands. Thank you to everyone that gathered as part of this action, families and staff together, with the message the public education is critical and a valued part of our community.

I am beyond grateful for the many ways families show up to support our school community, to be active in our community, and to support others in our community. Thank you! As we move into the spring there will be many volunteer opportunities for spring events, like Evening of the Arts and Field Day, and celebratory events like 5^th grade promotion and the kindergarten celebration. There will also continue to be fieldtrips that need amazing family volunteers! We know families juggle very busy schedules with work and family commitments, so thank you in advance for stepping up for these important volunteer needs.

In addition, VEPTSA, our partners that help us bring during the school day enrichment, guest artists and authors, assemblies, fieldtrips, and supplemental curricular supports to our students, are looking for family leaders to be part of the VEPTSA board next year, as well as leaders for specific events and committees. While these roles can be daunting, there are roles with different levels of time commitment and every role important to continue helping our school community thrive. Please consider stepping into a role in VEPTSA! If you are interested in exploring potential ways to support and be involved in VEPTSA, please reach out to VEPTSA at volunteer@viewlandsptsa.org

Spring Enrichment Enrollment – Registration opens Monday March 24 @ 9:00am

Spring after school enrichment classes run on Tuesdays and Thursday for 8 week, April 22 through June 12. Sign up for returning favorites like Chess Club and Lego Engineering or try something new like Creative Coding! Illumination Theater is back with mini movies, and our always popular art clubs are focusing on Minecraft and Hello Kitty this time around – Secure your spot today! Registration open from Monday March 24 – Friday April 4.

Esta semana comenzó el lunes con una increíble asamblea de toda la escuela que celebró el baile, la música y el Día de San Patricio. Uno de nuestros estudiantes de Viewlands es miembro del equipo de danza irlandesa en el estudio Tara Academy of Irish Dance. Como parte de su servicio comunitario y para celebrar el Día de San Patricio, los bailarines del estudio pasan todo el día y la noche actuando de forma gratuita en escuelas y centros de vida para personas mayores. Viewlands tuvo la suerte de estar en las escuelas que visitaron. Nuestros estudiantes de Viewlands fueron una audiencia excepcional y el baile fue maravilloso. ¡Gracias a nuestra estudiante y su familia por darle a Viewlands esta oportunidad de ser una de las escuelas donde se presentaron!

Además de la asamblea del lunes, el martes, tuvimos una visita de autor invitado para nuestros estudiantes de Kindergarten a 3er grado. Leslie Booth, una autora, visitó Viewlands y compartió sobre su práctica creativa como autora de libros infantiles en una asamblea.

La asamblea de baile irlandés del lunes fue un gran punto culminante. Algunos otros puntos destacados de mis visitas a las aulas y con los estudiantes esta semana: hablar y explorar el origami con un estudiante de 1er grado y un estudiante de 5to grado; ver a un estudiante de 5º grado practicar sus habilidades de liderazgo leyendo y apoyando a un niño de kindergarten; explorando 10 y 1 y saltando el conteo en inglés y español con algunos estudiantes de 1er grado; y compartiendo entusiasmo con algunos de los estudiantes de K-3 después de que la autora invitada, Leslie Booth, visitara Viewlands.

Sus hijos son pensadores brillantes, curiosos y creativos. Continuaremos buscando formas de hacer que cada estudiante se sienta conocido, valorado y empoderado durante todo el año.

Ganadores de la portada del anuario

Al igual que en los últimos años, tuvimos hermosas portadas. La creatividad de nuestros alumnos es maravillosa. El tiempo y el esfuerzo que los 33 estudiantes artistas invirtieron en sus obras fue evidente. ¡Nos encantó cada una de las entradas! Todas las entradas aparecerán en el anuario.

Este año tuvimos un ganador y un empate a cuatro bandas por el 2º lugar. Nuestro ganador será la portada del anuario. Las cuatro entradas que empataron en el segundo lugar aparecerán en la contraportada del anuario. Todas las demás entradas se presentarán en pequeñas formas dentro del anuario.

Los ganadores fueron anunciados en la escuela el viernes.

Salmón en escuelas en Viewlands: Nuestro salmón frito

Nuestros salmones están nadando activamente alrededor del tanque, todos han pasado de la etapa de alevines a la de alevines. Nuestros alumnos de 4º y 5º grado y el Sr. Arango continúan haciendo las pruebas de agua en el tanque de salmón para obtener un ambiente de agua saludable para nuestros alevines de salmón y alimentan al salmón 3-4 veces al día. ¡Siempre es emocionante una vez que están en la etapa de alevines!

Como se compartió anteriormente, se le pidió a Viewlands que participara en un documental sobre las relaciones vitales entre las personas, la naturaleza y los sistemas alimentarios en el área de Seattle, como una escuela que participa en el proyecto Salmon in Schools. El documental, Feeding the Sound, será un documental de dos partes con voces de agricultores, líderes comunitarios, defensores del medio ambiente y educadores. El objetivo es conectar a las personas con las fuentes de alimentos a través de historias vividas y voces de quienes se dedican a “proteger los recursos naturales, abogar por la justicia alimentaria y crear caminos sostenibles para las generaciones futuras”. El documental está siendo dirigido por Xochitl Clare. La Dra. Clare es becaria postdoctoral en el Laboratorio Padilla-Gamino de la Facultad de Ciencias Acuáticas y Pesqueras de la Universidad de Washington. Es actriz, directora de cine, escritora e investigadora. La Dra. Clare se considera a sí misma una “narradora del mar”. Como parte de este documental, filmarán partes de la excursión de 4º^y 5º grado a Carkeek para liberar nuestro salmón en el estanque de impresión el 9 de abril.

Liderazgos Familiares, Oportunidades y Voluntariado en la Escuela

Nuestra comunidad de Viewlands está en su mejor momento cuando toda la comunidad trabaja en conjunto y prospera. Esta semana, muchos se reunieron el miércoles para celebrar la escuela pública y Viewlands. Gracias a todos los que se reunieron como parte de esta acción, a las familias y al personal juntos, con el mensaje de que la educación pública es fundamental y una parte valiosa de nuestra comunidad.

Estoy más que agradecida por las muchas formas en que las familias se presentan para apoyar a nuestra comunidad escolar, para ser activas en nuestra comunidad y para apoyar a otros en nuestra comunidad. ¡Gracias! A medida que avanzamos hacia la primavera, habrá muchas oportunidades de voluntariado para eventos de primavera, como la Noche de las Artes y el Día de Campo, y eventos de celebración como la promoción del 5º grado y la celebración del jardín de infantes. ¡También seguirá habiendo excursiones que necesitan voluntarios familiares increíbles! Sabemos que las familias hacen malabarismos con horarios muy ocupados con compromisos laborales y familiares, así que gracias de antemano por dar un paso adelante para estas importantes necesidades de voluntariado.

Además, VEPTSA, nuestros socios que nos ayudan a llevar durante el día escolar enriquecimiento, artistas y autores invitados, asambleas, excursiones y apoyos curriculares complementarios a nuestros estudiantes, están buscando líderes familiares para ser parte de la junta directiva de VEPTSA el próximo año, así como líderes para eventos y comités específicos. Si bien estos roles pueden ser desalentadores, hay roles con diferentes niveles de compromiso de tiempo y cada rol es importante para continuar ayudando a nuestra comunidad escolar a prosperar. ¡Por favor, considere asumir un papel en VEPTSA!
