Principal Wheeler’s Weekly Update 3-29-24

Hello Viewlands Families!

March 31st is the International Transgender Day of Visibility. At Viewlands we have students, family members, and community members that identify as trans. We recognize the importance of knowing our students and honoring their identities, which represent diverse lived experiences. SPS is for ALL is a reminder that we serve all students and families. This includes all LGBTQ+, Black and indigenous students and families, students and families of color, those who come from a range of faiths, and students and families who have a range of abilities. Viewlands, along with all schools in SPS, are charged with creating an inclusive community where voices are lifted, stories are known and valued, all identities are honored, and kindness is felt by all. We have more work to do in our Viewlands community. We are committed to ongoing learning and reflecting together to continue in that journey, along with other schools in SPS, so we truly can live the SPS for ALL.

There are always highlights when listening and learning with and from our students. This week feeling the excitement and joy during a rock-paper-scissors team building activity in 2nd grade; watching 3rd-5th graders navigate the excitement, joy, and disappointment positively during the Connect Four Tournament; listening to some of our students share the things they like about Viewlands, our new building, and the staff that support them; and watching a few 4th graders share their reading successes were the highlights! Your children are bright, inquisitive, and creative thinkers. We will continue to seek ways to make every student feel known, valued, and empowered through the year.

In Partnership,

Carrie Wheeler | Viewlands Principal

2nd Trimester Progress Reports

Wednesday March 27th was the final day of the 2nd trimester of learning at Viewlands. 2nd trimester progress reports will be printed and sent home next week. Please look for the printed progress reports to come home with students in their red folders on Wednesday or Thursday next week. During spring break, the progress reports will become available on the Source digitally. Elementary progress reports in Seattle Public Schools use a number system for scores based on standards. To interpret and understand the numbers scoring, please review the below linked documents.

Lost and Found

The Viewlands Lost and Found is full! If you are at the school during arrival, dismissal, or to volunteer, please feel free to let the office team know you want to look at the Lost and Found to locate some of your child’s lost items. A reminder, please label items with your child’s name. Our staff and VEPTSA volunteers try to go through the lost and found once a month and bring any labeled items back to the student. Most items do not have a name so continue to live in the Lost and Found.
