Principal Wheeler’s Weekly Update 5-16-25

Hello Viewlands Families! 

Thank you to all the families that were able to come to our Evening of Arts and Culture. It was a beautiful night of creativity with art and dance, play in the playground, and seeing the mural in our middle stairs. We had quite a few new incoming families with kindergarten students that also joined our evening event. Thank you to VEPTSA for support, the many volunteers who helped make this event successful, Ms. B, our art teacher, Ms. Norma, and the ML Team (Ms. Kutch, Ms. Kate, and Mr. Hector) for your leadership and coordination of the event.

The school year is winding down. We have only 22 days of school left this school year. This means many things. The student energy is high. This time of year, students can have high energy and big feelings. For some students summer break is tons of fun, but still a change that can lead to high energy or big feelings. For some students summer break and not having the school schedule, routines, and time to see friends regularly is hard and can lead to big feelings. In addition, this time of year means spring and end of year testing across the grades. All student K-5 have started taking the MAP district assessment. The spring MAP test is given in both math and reading in all grades. The window for MAP ends May 30th. Our K-2 students will also take the DIBELS literacy screener in June and the 3rd-5th graders will be taking the state SBA assessment. If you have questions about the schedule of assessments for your child with MAP or SBA, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

Springtime also means a very full lost and found. Ms. Lin has brought the lost and found up to the first floor by the entrance. If you are at school for pick-up, drop-off, volunteering, or an event, please look and help reunite lost belongings with your child.

A few highlights from my visits in classrooms and with students this week: talking with a few 1st graders about math, including breaking part numbers, different strategies for adding and subtracting numbers, and solving problems related to money; 3rd graders practicing sharing their writing; hearing some of the 2nd, 4th and 5th graders talk about the fairytales they are working on currently; and reviewing a student sprit week proposal from a group of passionate 4th graders.

Your children are bright, inquisitive, and creative thinkers. We will continue to seek ways to make every student feel known, valued, and empowered through the year.

Save the Date for a School Spirit Week

A few passionate 4th graders have made a proposal for an end of the school year spirit week. They made their pitch and did the work to plan! Please save the date for a school spirit week in June! June 2nd through June 6th will be the school spirit week. Participation is optional. They hope many feel inspired to participate, but it is completely optional.

• Monday June 2nd – Lazy Day, think cozy clothes
• Tuesday June 3rd – Sports Day
• Wednesday June 4th – Rainbow day
• Thursday June 5th – School Spirit, wear your Viewlands gear and/or wear blue
• Friday June 6th – Crazy Day – think mix-ups, do your hair different, mixed matched or silly socks, backwards shirt, etc.

Next Year Start of School Supplies

We are working with VEPTSA to change how we will do start of school supplies. We hope this will make it easier for families, but also then it helps make sure the classrooms have what they need for students. Instead on families purchasing individual supplies for each student from lists, there will be a per student cost. Then VEPTSA will work with the school to do bulk ordering for the start of school supplies. We are working with VEPTSA now. More information will be available before the end of this school year. Like previous years, supplies will be shared in the classroom, so every student has what they need. The only supplies that will not be part of this would be backpacks, water bottles, and headphones for some grades. More information coming soon.

Orca PRIDE Club All School Assembly

Ms. Barry helps lead the Orca Pride club. This club has been part of Viewlands for several years now. Students helped start this by expressing interest. Ms. Barry meets with 4th and 5th grade students that want to be part of the Orca pride club weekly. This club will be leading an all-school assembly to support Pride month in June, in addition to representing Viewlands at the annual PhinneyWood Rainbow Hop Pride celebration in Greenwood.

The all-school Pride assembly is scheduled for Monday, June 2nd. The theme of the assembly is What Does PRIDE Mean to Me. Students in the Orca Pride club would love to have other students and families participate and share their own stories about why PRIDE is important to them.

End of School Year Events

Classroom teachers will share information about any classroom specific activities, like fieldtrips, writing celebrations, or other celebrations that might be happening in their classroom this last month of school. If you have questions about classroom activities, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

Below are some of the cross-grade level activities that are part of our end of year activities.

• Friday June 6th 9-9:30AM, 4th and 5th Grade Elementary Instrumental Music showcase

This is open to families of 4th and 5th graders that are part of this program.

This is open to our kindergarten families, the K team will provide details

• Friday June 13th Field Day (AM at school), lots of approved family volunteers needed

VEPTSA Spring General Meeting – Tuesday May 20

Save the Date for the Spring General Meeting. This is an important meeting with a vote on nominations and the budget for next year. Onsite childcare provided by Creative Kids.

All-School Meet-Up at the Viewlands Elementary Playground

Join us on Saturday, May 31st, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM for an All-School Meet-Up at the Viewlands Elementary Playground! This is not a drop-off event—children must be accompanied by an adult. There is no bathroom access.

Save the Date – Field Day Volunteers Needed June 13

Be on the lookout to sign up to volunteer to assist with running stations, supervising games, and supporting our students during Field Day. All Field Day volunteers must be registered with Seattle Public Schools.

¡Hola familias de Viewlands!

Gracias a todas las familias que pudieron venir a nuestra Noche de Arte y Cultura. Fue una hermosa noche de creatividad con arte y danza, juegos en el patio de recreo y ver el mural en nuestras escaleras centrales. Tuvimos bastantes familias nuevas con estudiantes de kindergarten que también se unieron a nuestro evento nocturno. Gracias a VEPTSA por su apoyo, a los muchos voluntarios que ayudaron a que este evento fuera exitoso, a la Sra. B, a nuestra maestra de arte, la Sra. Norma, y al equipo de ML (Sra. Kutch, Sra. Kate y Sr. Héctor) por su liderazgo y coordinación del evento.

El año escolar está llegando a su fin. Solo nos quedan 22 días de clases este año escolar. Esto significa muchas cosas. La energía de los estudiantes es alta. En esta época del año, los estudiantes pueden tener mucha energía y grandes sentimientos. Para algunos estudiantes, las vacaciones de verano son muy divertidas, pero siguen siendo un cambio que puede generar mucha energía o grandes sentimientos. Para algunos estudiantes, las vacaciones de verano y no tener el horario escolar, las rutinas y el tiempo para ver a los amigos con regularidad son difíciles y pueden generar grandes sentimientos. Además, esta época del año significa exámenes de primavera y fin de año en todos los grados. Todos los estudiantes de K-5 han comenzado a tomar la evaluación del distrito MAP. El examen MAP de primavera se da tanto en matemáticas como en lectura en todos los grados. La ventana para MAP termina el 30 de mayo. Nuestros estudiantes de K-2 también tomarán la evaluación de alfabetización DIBELS en junio y los estudiantes de 3º a 5º grado tomarán la evaluación estatal de la SBA. Si tiene preguntas sobre el horario de evaluaciones para su hijo con MAP o SBA, comuníquese con el maestro de su hijo.

La primavera también significa un mundo de objetos perdidos muy completo. La Sra. Lin ha llevado a los objetos perdidos hasta el primer piso junto a la entrada. Si está en la escuela para recogerlo, dejarlo, ser voluntario o para un evento, busque y ayude a reunir las pertenencias perdidas con su hijo.

Algunos aspectos destacados de mis visitas a las aulas y con los estudiantes esta semana: hablar con algunos estudiantes de 1er grado sobre matemáticas, incluyendo dividir números de partes, diferentes estrategias para sumar y restar números y resolver problemas relacionados con el dinero; Estudiantes de 3er grado practicando compartir su escritura; escuchar a algunos de los alumnos de 2º, 4º y 5º grado hablar sobre los cuentos de hadas en los que están trabajando actualmente; y revisar una propuesta de un grupo de apasionados estudiantes de 4º grado.

Sus hijos son pensadores brillantes, curiosos y creativos. Continuaremos buscando formas de hacer que cada estudiante se sienta conocido, valorado y empoderado durante todo el año.

Reserve la fecha para una Semana de Espíritu Escolar

Algunos apasionados estudiantes de 4º grado han hecho una propuesta para una semana de espíritu de fin de año escolar. ¡Hicieron su presentación e hicieron el trabajo según lo planeado! ¡Por favor, reserve la fecha para una semana de espíritu escolar en junio! Del 2 al 6 de junio será la semana del espíritu escolar. La participación es opcional. Esperan que muchos se sientan inspirados a participar, pero es completamente opcional.

• Lunes 2 de junio – Lazy Day, piensa en ropa acogedora
• Martes 3 de junio – Día del Deporte
• Miércoles 4 de junio – Día del Arco Iris
• Jueves 5 de junio – Espíritu Escolar, usa tu equipo de Viewlands y/o vístete de azul
• Viernes 6 de junio – Día de los Locos – piensa en confusiones, peinarte de manera diferente, calcetines combinados o tontos, camisa al revés, etc.

El próximo año Inicio de útiles escolares

Estamos trabajando con VEPTSA para cambiar la forma en que haremos el inicio de los útiles escolares. Esperamos que esto facilite las cosas para las familias, pero también ayude a garantizar que las aulas tengan lo que necesitan para los estudiantes. En cambio, si las familias compran útiles individuales para cada estudiante de las listas, habrá un costo por estudiante. Luego, VEPTSA trabajará con la escuela para hacer pedidos al por mayor para el inicio de los útiles escolares. Ahora estamos trabajando con VEPTSA. Más información estará disponible antes de que finalice este año escolar. Al igual que en años anteriores, los útiles se compartirán en el aula, para que cada estudiante tenga lo que necesita. Los únicos suministros que no serán parte de esto serían mochilas, botellas de agua y auriculares para algunos grados. Más información próximamente.

Asamblea de toda la escuela del Club Orca PRIDE

La Sra. Barry ayuda a dirigir el club Orca Pride. Este club forma parte de Viewlands desde hace varios años. Los estudiantes ayudaron a comenzar esto expresando interés. La Sra. Barry se reúne semanalmente con estudiantes de 4º y 5º grado que quieren ser parte del club del orgullo de Orcas. Este club liderará una asamblea de toda la escuela para apoyar el mes del Orgullo en junio, además de representar a Viewlands en la celebración anual del Orgullo Rainbow Hop de PhinneyWood en Greenwood.

La asamblea del Orgullo de todas las escuelas está programada para el lunes 2 de junio. El tema de la asamblea es ¿Qué significa el orgullo para mí? A los estudiantes del club Orca Pride les encantaría que otros estudiantes y familias participaran y compartieran sus propias historias sobre por qué PRIDE es importante para ellos.

Eventos de Fin de Año Escolar

Reunión de toda la escuela en el patio de recreo de la Escuela Primaria Viewlands

¡Únase a nosotros el sábado 31 de mayo, de 1:00 p.m. a 3:00 p.m. para una reunión de toda la escuela en el patio de recreo de la escuela primaria Viewlands! Este no es un evento de entrega: los niños deben estar acompañados por un adulto. No hay acceso al baño.

Reserve la fecha – Se necesitan voluntarios del Día de Campo el 13 de junio

Esté atento para inscribirse como voluntario para ayudar con las estaciones de carrera, supervisar los juegos y apoyar a nuestros estudiantes durante el Día de Campo. Todos los voluntarios del Día de Campo deben estar registrados en las Escuelas Públicas de Seattle.
