Hello Viewlands Families!

We now have only 17 school days left in the 2025-2026 school year. There is no school on Monday for the Memorial Day holiday. We will resume school on Tuesday, May 23^rd.

Thank you to families who have shared any updates or changes to their child’s school plan for next school year. If your family is moving or changing schools, please let us know. If the change of school is occurring based on choice enrollment to Cascadia or an option school in SPS, we receive that information in our system. If the change is due to a move or other reason, we won’t know that information. Please reach out to our office team and the classroom teacher to provide those updates so we can plan for next year and help provide any necessary information you might need for the new school.  It is helpful if we know that information now. Thank you!

A few highlights from my visits in classrooms and with students this week: reading 2^nd graders writing and playing a game with 2^nd graders in Ms. Norma’s class; having lunch and playing games with a few K-2^nd grade students; having a robust and interesting discussion with a few 5^th graders requiring their questions regarding life, time dimensions, and if we were really just living out an alien experiment; and learning from a few 1^st graders in Ms. Veliz’s class about spiders.

Your children are bright, inquisitive, and creative thinkers. We will continue to seek ways to make every student feel known, valued, and empowered through the year.

New English Language Arts (ELA) Curriculum Adoption

Seattle Public Schools is launching a K–5 instructional materials adoption to ensure our curriculum best supports our new strategic plan. As part of this process, the adoption committee is seeking input from teachers, families, and community members to better understand their needs, expectations, and preferences. Your feedback is critical and will play a key role in guiding the committee’s review and selection of new instructional materials. Thank you for sharing your insights and helping us make informed decisions for our students.

Families can provide feedback through a survey available in 6 languages. This is open through May 30^th. Please share your feedback. The more voices the better. The flyer below has links for the feedback survey in English, Amharic, Chinese, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

Save the Date for a School Spirit Week

A few passionate 4^th graders have made a proposal for an end of the school year spirit week. They made their pitch and did the work to plan! Please save the date for a school spirit week in June! June 2^nd through June 6^th will be the school spirit week. Participation is optional. They hope many feel inspired to participate, but it is completely optional.

• Monday June 2nd – Lazy Day, think cozy clothes
• Tuesday June 3^rd – Sports Day
• Wednesday June 4^th – Rainbow day
• Thursday June 5^th – School Spirit, wear your Viewlands gear and/or Viewlands color, blue
• Friday June 6^th – Crazy Day – think mix-ups, do your hair different, mixed matched or silly socks, backwards shirt, etc.

Orca PRIDE Assembly

Correction on Date: The all-school Pride assembly is scheduled for Wednesday June 4^th. The theme of the assembly is What Does PRIDE Mean to Me. This assembly is led by students in the Orca Pride club, with support from Ms. Barry.  This will be an all-school assembly. Families of performers (students leading it from the Orca Pride club) are welcome to attend, Ms. Barry will share more information.

Next Year Start of School Supplies

We are working with VEPTSA to change how we will do start of school supplies. We hope this will make it easier for families, but also then it helps make sure the classrooms have what they need for students. Instead on families purchasing individual supplies for each student from lists, there will be a per student cost. Then VEPTSA will work with the school to do bulk ordering for the start of school supplies. We are working with VEPTSA now. More information will be available before the end of this school year. Like previous years, supplies will be shared in the classroom, so every student has what they need. The only supplies that will not be part of this would be backpacks, water bottles, and headphones for some grades. More information coming soon.

End of School Year Events

Classroom teachers will share information about any classroom specific activities, like fieldtrips, writing celebrations, or other celebrations that might be happening in their classroom this last month of school. If you have questions about classroom activities, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

Below are some of the cross-grade level activities that are part of our end of year activities.

• Friday June 6^th 9-9:30AM, 4^th and 5^th Grade Elementary Instrumental Music showcase

This is open to families of 4^th and 5^th graders that are part of this program.

This is open to our kindergarten families, the K team will provide details

All-School Meet-Up at the Viewlands Elementary Playground

Join us on Saturday, May 31st, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM for an All-School Meet-Up at the Viewlands Elementary Playground! This is not a drop-off event—children must be accompanied by an adult. There is no bathroom access.

Save the Date – Field Day Volunteers Needed June 13

¡Hola familias de Viewlands!

Ahora solo nos quedan 17 días escolares en el año escolar 2025-2026. No hay clases el lunes por el feriado del Día de los Caídos. Reanudaremos las clases el martes 23 de mayo.

Gracias a las familias que han compartido cualquier actualización o cambio en el plan escolar de sus hijos para el próximo año escolar. Si su familia se muda o cambia de escuela, por favor háganoslo saber. Si el cambio de escuela se produce en base a la inscripción de elección en Cascadia o en una escuela de opción en SPS, recibimos esa información en nuestro sistema. Si el cambio se debe a una mudanza u otro motivo, no sabremos esa información. Por favor, póngase en contacto con nuestro equipo de oficina y con el maestro del aula para proporcionar esas actualizaciones para que podamos planificar el próximo año y ayudar a proporcionar cualquier información necesaria que pueda necesitar para la nueva escuela.  Sería útil si conocimos esa información ahora. ¡Gracias!

Algunos aspectos destacados de mis visitas a las aulas y con los estudiantes esta semana: leer a los estudiantes de 2º grado, escribir y jugar un juego con los estudiantes de 2º grado en la clase de la Sra. Norma; almorzar y jugar con algunos estudiantes de K-2º grado; tener una discusión robusta e interesante con algunos estudiantes de 5º grado que requerían sus preguntas sobre la vida, las dimensiones del tiempo y si realmente estábamos viviendo un experimento alienígena; y aprender de algunos estudiantes de 1er grado en la clase de la Sra. Veliz sobre las arañas.

Sus hijos son pensadores brillantes, curiosos y creativos. Continuaremos buscando formas de hacer que cada estudiante se sienta conocido, valorado y empoderado durante todo el año.

Adopción del nuevo currículo de Artes del Lenguaje Inglés (ELA)

Las Escuelas Públicas de Seattle están lanzando una adopción de materiales de instrucción K-5 para garantizar que nuestro plan de estudios respalde mejor nuestro nuevo plan estratégico. Como parte de este proceso, el comité de adopción está buscando la opinión de los maestros, las familias y los miembros de la comunidad para comprender mejor sus necesidades, expectativas y preferencias. Sus comentarios son fundamentales y desempeñarán un papel clave en la guía de la revisión y selección de nuevos materiales didácticos por parte del comité. Gracias por compartir sus ideas y ayudarnos a tomar decisiones informadas para nuestros estudiantes.

Las familias pueden proporcionar comentarios a través de una encuesta disponible en 6 idiomas. Está abierto hasta el 30 de mayo. Por favor, comparte tus comentarios. Cuantas más voces, mejor. Reserve la fecha para una Semana de Espíritu Escolar

Algunos apasionados estudiantes de 4º grado han hecho una propuesta para una semana de espíritu de fin de año escolar. ¡Hicieron su presentación e hicieron el trabajo según lo planeado! ¡Por favor, reserve la fecha para una semana de espíritu escolar en junio! Del 2 al 6 de junio será la semana del espíritu escolar. La participación es opcional. Esperan que muchos se sientan inspirados a participar, pero es completamente opcional.

• Lunes 2 de junio – Lazy Day, piensa en ropa acogedora
• Martes 3 de junio – Día del Deporte
• Miércoles 4 de junio – Día del Arco Iris
• Jueves 5 de junio – Espíritu escolar, usa tu equipo de Viewlands y/o el color de Viewlands, azul
• Viernes 6 de junio – Día de los Locos – piensa en confusiones, peinarte de manera diferente, calcetines combinados o tontos, camisa al revés, etc.

Asamblea Orca PRIDE

Corrección en la fecha: La asamblea del Orgullo de todas las escuelas está programada para el miércoles 4 de junio. El tema de la asamblea es ¿Qué significa el orgullo para mí? Esta asamblea es dirigida por estudiantes del club Orca Pride, con el apoyo de la Sra. Barry.  Esta será una asamblea de toda la escuela. Las familias de los artistas (estudiantes que lo dirigen desde el club Orca Pride) son bienvenidas a asistir, la Sra. Barry compartirá más información.

El próximo año Inicio de útiles escolares

Estamos trabajando con VEPTSA para cambiar la forma en que haremos el inicio de los útiles escolares. Esperamos que esto facilite las cosas para las familias, pero también ayude a garantizar que las aulas tengan lo que necesitan para los estudiantes. En cambio, si las familias compran útiles individuales para cada estudiante de las listas, habrá un costo por estudiante. Luego, VEPTSA trabajará con la escuela para hacer pedidos al por mayor para el inicio de los útiles escolares. Ahora estamos trabajando con VEPTSA. Más información estará disponible antes de que finalice este año escolar. Al igual que en años anteriores, los útiles se compartirán en el aula, para que cada estudiante tenga lo que necesita. Los únicos suministros que no serán parte de esto serían mochilas, botellas de agua y auriculares para algunos grados. Más información próximamente.

Eventos de Fin de Año Escolar

Los maestros del aula compartirán información sobre cualquier actividad específica del aula, como excursiones, celebraciones de escritura u otras celebraciones que puedan estar sucediendo en su salón de clases este último mes de clases. Si tiene preguntas sobre las actividades del aula, comuníquese con el maestro de su hijo.

• Viernes 13 de junio Día de Campo (AM en la escuela), se necesitan muchos voluntarios familiares aprobados
