Principal Wheeler’s Weekly Update 9-12-25
Hello Viewlands Families!
We welcomed our youngest orcas to school this week, with the start of kindergarten and preschool students starting on Monday. We love getting to know our kindergarten and preschool Orcas! We had a welcome back beginning of the school year assembly on Wednesday morning. Ollie the Orca shared a video helping everyone remember what safe, kind, and responsible looks like in our different spaces. We also talked about stewardship of our spaces and how each member of the community must help by taking care of each other, our learning materials, our classroom, and our school.
We continued this week learning classroom routines and school-wide expectations that support individual learning and community building. Being part of a classroom community and a whole school community, requires routines and shared common expectations. Our school-wide common expectations for Viewlands orcas are safe, kind, and responsible.
Our students are all learning and growing their skills at their own pace and starting place. As a public neighborhood school, every Viewlands learner has their own unique stories and their own baseline of skills, strengths, and areas of growth. We will work to differentiate learning opportunities for students, while also honoring the importance of learning from and with one another and the importance of being in community. We will support students talking and listening to each other, understanding the impact they had on the community or another individual, and then problem solving together when needed. We know conflicts will arise, that is part of being in community together. We try to emphasize that consequences are part of every action. We support learning and growing their knowledge, academic skills, social skills, emotional regulation skills, independence, and communication skills.
Together as families, students, and staff at Viewlands, we can all appreciate the idea of creating community that honors the richness of the diversity of life story that is present at Viewlands. Every student has their own unique identity, strengths, and areas of growth. Every family has their own family story. We bring all those unique stories, strengths, and needs into our shared school community.
A few highlights from my visits in classrooms and with students this first full week include: our school wide welcome back assembly; Orca Explore time with all of our new kindergarteners; expanding our mathematical thinking by explaining place value and showing a number in multiple ways including exponents with 5th graders (they love to test my math skills); observing and celebrating the amazing work and dedication of our 4th and 5th grade leaders that volunteered to be table captains and lunch helpers for our kindergarteners; and seeing pure excitement and joy as many students were able to visit the library and check out books the end of this week.
Your children are bright, inquisitive, and creative thinkers. We will continue to seek ways to make every student feel known, valued, and empowered through the year.

Important Safety Reminder
We have noticed at drop off and pick-up some families are parking on the east side of 3rd and running across the street. This is NOT safe. If you park on the east side of 3rd, you need to use the cross walk at 105th or 107th. Please do not run across the street. 3rd is a main arterial and running across the street is dangerous.
Home-School Red Folders
The start of school forms went home Monday. Please return the required forms by Monday, September 15th.
- REQUIRED for ALL: Anything on green paper is required and must be completed and returned in the red folder by Monday September 15th.
- REQUIRED FOR SOME: Anything on yellow paper are return only IF it applies to your child/family. If it does NOT apply to your child/family you don’t need to return it.
- INFORMATION: All other is information for your family.
Why the green Nutrition Eligibility and Education benefits form?
We are currently a Title 1 school. This means we receive Title 1 funding, which allows us to fund part of our academic intervention specialist position. Without this we would not be able to fund that position. In addition, being a Title 1 school, we qualify for the Community Provision program, providing free lunch and breakfast to all students. They determine if we will continue to be a Title 1 school next year based on our percentage of families that are eligible. If our percentage of eligibility decreases, we could lose Title 1 funding next school year. While we recognize some families will not be eligible, we request all families complete it so we can make sure we have accurate data when they determine our eligibility for Title 1 funding in the next budget cycle.
Sharing Food in Classrooms
We have students with allergies. We have some students with more severe allergies. We can’t have any food made from home shared at school. While we know families will do their best to avoid allergens, we can’t ensure there is no cross-contamination. Any food brought from home into the classrooms must be store bought with the nutrition labels on it so we can review this ahead of time. We cannot make any exceptions during the school day.
We are moving away from treats being brought in for birthdays. Many classes are honoring birthdays in other ways so every child is celebrated in a similar way at school.
Lost and Found
The lost and found will quickly become a very full beast! (: To help us reunite your child with items, like coats, water bottles, hats, and lunchboxes is to label them with their name. Please write your child’s name on those items. We will have volunteers supporting our office team in helping labeled items from the lost and found get back to the students.
Lunch
We do our best to encourage students to eat their lunches, but please note the lunch supervision team are supervising a high number of students so we will not be able to check lunches daily. If we see patterns or become aware of children not eating, we will try to do daily check-ins with them to encourage them and reach out to you. If your child is a picky eater, please know that they may not eat well when the options are not something they are willing to eat. Please talk with your child about what they are eating.
The school lunch menu posted on the SPS website is not always accurate. They make the menus ahead of time, but there have been ongoing supply chain challenges that mean they don’t get the food needed for that menu item. This means the school nutrition services team will need to prepare what they have, which will be different than the menu choice. This is challenging we understand so thank you for your understanding and flexibility.
Home Lunches: We can’t microwave food from home lunches. We have hot water for the cup of noodles that we can provide, but we can’t microwave/warm food from home lunches. Please don’t send food that your child will only eat if warmed up/microwaved as we are not able to do that at school.
Bring Your Family to School Night: Tuesday September 30th
Viewlands will host a Bring Your Family to School Open house on Tuesday, September 30th (except for Mr. Thorpe’s class) in the evening. This is for all current Viewlands families. Every Viewlands student will be given a Viewlands Passport. The passport will have places to visit that are the spaces your child goes to during the school day, including your child’s classroom, the art room, the gym for PE, the library, and the lunchroom. You will have the chance to see the spaces and meet the educators that are part of your child’s elementary experience this year. There will be other optional places to visit, including the multilingual team, special education team, school counselor, and VEPTSA.
The event is an open house style. Typically, families were here for 30-60 minutes to visit the different spaces. The event will start at 5:30PM and end at 7:00pm. Please plan to arrive no later than 6:30pm so you have time to visit the spaces. Families will need to exit the school building/campus by 7:05pm. This is not a drop off event, students attend with their families.
We encourage walking or biking for the event if possible. If your family will need to drive, please park in approved areas. There is parking available on the west side of 3rd in front of the school, on the north side of the school on 107th, and limited parking in the parking lot with spaces not used by staff. Please do not park on 105th west of 3rd Ave, and avoid parking in non-parking areas on the east side of 3rd Ave.

Viewlands Orca Bike Pod
We have a north and south route that rides to school every Wednesday. Volunteers support students riding to the school. Currently we need volunteers to continue our south route. Students need to be able to ride up and down hills on their bikes independently. Parents are welcome to join as well. Students meet at the route starting points at 7:30AM and we depart at 7:35AM. The routes are on the map.

Move-a thon: Kids can start asking for pledges!
Our Move-A-Thon is happening during the school day on Monday, October 6. Students can run or walk laps, dance, or move their bodies. The online fundraising window is now open and families are encouraged (but never required) to help kids gather pledges or donations from friends and relatives.
How to Participate
- Go to the Student Center and search for your child’s page (you’ll also see sample text, email, and social posts you can use for outreach).
- Share the link with family and friends. Supporters can choose a per-lap pledge or a flat donation.
Your support directly funds playground supervision, classroom supplies, field trips, teacher grants, and community events that make Viewlands a safe, joyful place for every student to learn and thrive.
Volunteering
Want to volunteer? Please see Principal Wheeler’s email from 9/4 about registering to be an SPS-approved volunteer at Viewlands this school year. Move-a-thon volunteer opportunities will be shared soon on Konstella. Please start the process to sign up to be a volunteer now. We have opportunities coming up soon, including Move-a-thon Monday October 6th and the all-school Zoo fieldtrip on Friday October 31st. The process can take 4-6 weeks so please start this right away!

¡Hola familias de Viewlands!
Dimos la bienvenida a nuestras orcas más jóvenes a la escuela esta semana, con el inicio de los estudiantes de jardín de infantes y preescolar a partir del lunes. ¡Nos encanta conocer a nuestras orcas de jardín de infantes y preescolares! Tuvimos una bienvenida al comienzo de la asamblea del año escolar el miércoles por la mañana. Ollie the Orca compartió un video que ayuda a todos a recordar cómo se ve la seguridad, la amabilidad y la responsabilidad en nuestros diferentes espacios. Recordatorio de seguridad importante
Hemos notado que al dejar y recoger a algunas familias se estacionan en el lado este de 3rd y cruzan la calle. Esto NO es seguro. Si se estaciona en el lado este de la 3ª, debe usar el paso de peatones en la 105ª o 107ª. Por favor, no cruces la calle corriendo. La 3ª es una arteria principal y cruzar la calle es peligroso.
Carpetas rojas para el hogar y la escuela
Los formularios de inicio de clases se fueron a casa el lunes. Devuelva los formularios requeridos antes del lunes 15 de septiembre.
- REQUERIDO para TODOS: Se requiere todo lo que esté en papel verde y debe completarse y devolverse en la carpeta roja antes del lunes 15 de septiembre.

¿Por qué el formulario verde de beneficios de elegibilidad y educación nutricional?
Actualmente somos una escuela de Título 1. Esto significa que recibimos fondos del Título 1, lo que nos permite financiar parte de nuestro puesto de especialista en intervención académica. Sin esto, no podríamos financiar ese puesto. Además, al ser una escuela de Título 1, calificamos para el programa Community Provision, que brinda almuerzo y desayuno gratis a todos los estudiantes. Compartir alimentos en las aulas

Almuerzo

Viewlands Orca Bike Pod
Tenemos una ruta norte y sur que va a la escuela todos los miércoles. Los voluntarios apoyan a los estudiantes que van a la escuela.
