Viewlands Summer Updates

Viewlands Playground Updates and Closure Dates
- The Viewlands Playground will be open to the community for play this summer break. All playgrounds close at dusk. There will be some dates when the playground is closed for maintenance or projects. We will do our best to post these on this page, when possible, but there will likely be dates scheduled for additional maintenance projects during times when the Viewlands office and administration team are not working. The summer break is scheduled for Saturday June 21st through Monday September 1st. Please help us keep our playground beautiful and safe. No dogs are allowed on the school playgrounds. Please remind neighbors if you see dogs on the playground. Please report any concerns to the Seattle Public Schools security or SPD neighborhood watch. Please do not apply in the bioretention pond areas as this can impact the way they function in the rainy season. Thank you for helping us keep the Viewlands playground fun, safe, and open to community access!
- Closure date: Friday June 27th – Closed for raking on the turf field.
Summer Opportunities for Incoming Kindergarten and New to Viewlands Students
Kinder Camp @ Viewlands – Wednesday August 20th and Thursday August 21st (8:30-11:00AM)
- This is for incoming kindergarten students enrolled at Viewlands for the 2025-2026 school year. It is optional but participation is encouraged. There is no transportation provided, so family transport is required. Metro bus vouchers are possible for a family if needed.
- Drop off occurs between 8:45 and 9:10AM at the main entrance at Viewlands.
- Pick-up occurs outside the main entrance between 11:25 and 11:35AM
How to Drop Off and Pick-Up:
- The Viewlands Parking Lot is NOT available. During the school year, it is staff only. We had hoped families could use it for Kinder Camp drop off and pick-up, but it is closed for the week. There will be sealant and painting work happening in the parking lot. The sealant requires time to cure so it will be closed. You will need to park on 3rd Ave in front of the school, west side of 3rd OR west of 3rd on 107th if you need to drive. Walking to school for those that can highly encouraged.
- Please enter at the front main entrance off of 3rd. Walk to the front entrance and staff will greet you.
- Families will sign-in and then staff will direct you to the library. The K team will greet students in the library. This is where families will say goodbye to their children. We know that is hard on some students and many families, but this is an important part of the transition. When school starts families that bring their children to school say goodbye outside the main entrance. While coming to the library may be different, it helps prepare both children and families to say goodbye before they transition to their classrooms. We will have staff supporting them!
- For pick-up, please return to the main entrance and check-in with the staff. You’ll be given a sticker with your child’s name. You will wait for them to walk out with the team.
What to Bring:
- If your child has a preferred snack, please bring this in a labeled bag. We will also have snacks available.
- Labeled water bottle.
- Wear comfortable clothes to play inside and outside.
- NO Backpacks.

Class Assignments 1st through 5th:
Class assignments will be shared with families on Thursday, August 27th, in the afternoon by 5:00pm. You will receive a welcome email from your student’s teacher. Our staff have taken great care in creating balanced classrooms for students through the input of our staff that considered all shared information from families about their child throughout the last school year. We are not able to take family requests for specific teacher assignments or classroom shifts. Thank you in advance for your understanding and support of our process as we try to best support all our students.
Please plan to share with the classroom teacher your pick-up plan for your child daily. The classroom teacher will need to know if your child will be a family pick-up, bus, or other after school program pick-up Monday through Friday. This is critical information. Some students will be assigned a bus but may not be riding it. When you receive your welcome e-mail from your classroom teacher on Thursday 8/29, please respond with your child’s daily pick-up plan. Older students, 4th and 5th graders, can walk home independently with written parent permission.
School Breakfast and Lunch
School lunch and breakfast will continue this year to be free for all Viewlands students that want or need to access school breakfast and/or lunch. Seattle Public Schools can continue to offer free lunch and breakfast for all students at Title 1 Schools, including Viewlands, for the 2025-2026 school year. The breakfast options are highly limited and not a robust breakfast but available to students that need to eat at school when they arrive. Students can bring a lunch from home or get the school lunch options. Please note there are limited lunch options, so if your child does not eat or prefer many foods, school lunch is not always something they will eat.
Students that choose to eat school lunch are required to get a full meal. Students can NOT just get a milk. That is a requirement of the funding for the meal program.
Healthy School Guidelines
- Children with any symptoms are required to stay home. For fevers, children need to be fever free for 24 hours without medication prior to coming to school. For vomiting or diarrhea, children need to have no symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school without medication. Kids with cold symptoms should also stay home unless it is part of another diagnosed condition, like allergies.
- Students that develop symptoms/become ill at school will be cared for in our health room by our office team while they wait for family pick-up. Students that are ill at school will have to be picked up by a family member or emergency contact.
Please remember that while it can be challenging to keep your child home, this is the best way to keep our school community healthy! It is hard on the child when they come to school sick, but it also impacts the other children and the educators. Thank you for your partnership with this and helping us keep our Viewlands community healthy!
If your child has a medical diagnosis that requires supports at school, dietary needs due to an allergy, health condition, or other need, please reach out to our school nurse, Nurse Rebecca at rcdubin@seattleschools.org AND Ms. Lin in the office at lkmccormick@seattleschools.org
